One-Ninety Bar by Javier De Las Muelas

Located on the ground floor of the Four Seasons Hotel in Singapore, the One-Ninety Bar and Terraza is a luxuriously appointed oasis in the heart of busy Orchard Road. The hotel had apparently engaged Javier De Las Muelas from the Dry Martini Bar in Barcelona to craft their cocktails which will “take people on a journey through the senses”.

The One-Ninety Bar is a beautifully set up place to while away time. There is an outdoor terrace area but we found it to be a bit too dark and too near the road and exposed to the traffic noise.  It is the indoor seating that impresses. While drinks and cocktails are the main event here, we found that this place also serves food throughout the day with operating hours from 0730 to 0100 with afternoon tea served from 1400 to 1700.  The regular food menu is understandably not comprehensive but is probably adequate. For proper dining, the One Ninety Restaurant is just across the passageway from the Bar. There you can find a wide selection of food. The Bar would be a good place if you prefer a more intimate setting or if you are looking for something to eat after the regular restaurants are closed.

We stopped by One-Ninety Bar for drinks only that day and tried a few of their cocktails.  First was the fresh apple martini ($23). This was the best choice of the evening. It was beautiful to look and and tasted delicious. The fruity apple taste complemented the gin. Next was the thousand nights ($23) which was a mix of rum and passion fruit.  This was a bit stronger but did not receive rave reviews. We also tried the virgin colada ($12) which was well presented and zesty. The disappointment of the day was the flame o’love ($22) which was just a plain martini with a spot of lemon twist lying at the bottom of the glass.  We did not feel the love and the only flame was the heat from the alcohol in the glass.

All in all, the One-Ninety Bar is a stylish place to go for a drink or to eat something light. The afternoon tea ($42 per person, $62 with cocktails) may also be a good option for a gathering of friends.  But in terms of the cocktails alone, we did not think that the product lived up to the high expectations. At no time did we feel that we were on a journey through our senses.
