Don’t Cry for Meat Argentina at the revamped Bochinche restaurant

Bochinche Argentina Restaurant 20153

(June 2015 Update – Bochinche has moved to 115 Amoy Street) We went for lunch at Argentinian restaurant Bochinche which had undergone a facelift. Gone is the dark sombre tone of the old place (see our review of the old Bochinche here). In its place is a brighter look and the addition of a retail section selling wines and food. The interior designer must be quite a ‘punny’ guy with a sense of humour. It clearly makes the place a bit more fun and less serious but some might prefer the old look.

As you can see, we had the restaurant all to ourselves. One possible reason could be that they had done away with the set lunch menu which we thought was quite attractive. From their a la carte lunch menu, we ordered a crab on toast ($19) as a starter and for main courses, the whole seabass ($39) and roast free range chicken ($29) and a side dish of mushroom and gremolata ($9). There is a selection of Argentinian wines available by the bottle, carafe or glass. We were not familiar with any of them and so selected a carafe of the Circus 2013 sauvignon blanc ($33) simply because it matches the fun theme of the place.

The crab on toast looked so pretty when it arrived. It tasted as good as it looked. The generous amount of crabmeat on the toast meant that you get serious crab flavours with each bite. This is a must try dish. The seabass was not very big but was fresh and cooked just right. We are happy to trade quality with quantity when it comes to seafood. This was a very good fish. It was stuffed with herbs to remove any trace of fishiness. The chopped roasted almonds really complemented the tender taste of the fish. The Circus wine was relatively inexpensive but was fruity and refreshing. it provided a good pairing with the crab and the fish.

You can’t really go wrong with roasted chicken right? In this case, what made the dish stand out is the liberal use of herbs and garlic to enhance the taste of the roasted meat. The side order of mushroom turned out to be larger than expected. The teacup sized mushrooms could have been a meal by themselves.

It was a pleasant lunch. As in our past visit, we were impressed by the chef’s culinary skills and his ability to create dishes and tastes that distinguish themselves from others. Condiments to the chef!
