No hearth but bread and more at Bread & Hearth Katong V

Bread & Hearth Katong V

The folks in Katong are really spoilt for choice when it comes to bakeries. Popular artisanal bakeries like Do.Main French Bakery and Artisan Boulangerie Co. are now joined by Bread & Hearth. We have visited Bread & Hearth in Keong Siak Street and liked the place (see our post Bread & Hearth – Not Bread Alone). One of the things we liked about Bread & Hearth Keong Siak was the scent of baking bread from the kitchen. There is no hearth in Bread & Hearth Katong V but you can still get good bread, delicious pastries and more at this newly opened bakery cafe in East Coast.

Katong V Mall is the shopping podium of Katong V Hotel (formerly Paramount Hotel) at East Coast Road. The new outlet of Bread & Hearth Artisanal Bakery Cafe occupies the concourse area on the second level of Katong V Mall. Bread & Hearth Katong V has a contemporary rustic decor which uses a lot of wood to provide a cosy warm atmosphere. The red bricks of the Keong Siak outlet were incorporated into the counter design in Katong.

A good portion of the space is taken up by the food preparation area. Although no bread is baked at Bread & Hearth Katong V, croissants and other pastries are freshly made on the premises.

As is the practice with most cafes nowadays, at Bread & Hearth Katong V you order and pay at the counter and help yourself to the utensils and iced water. The food will be served to you.

Bread & Hearth Katong V offers a good range of artisan bread for take-away. Its dine-in menu offers mains (with prices of $12.80 to $15) like Baked French Toast, Burgers, Shepherd Pies as well as Sandwiches and Soup. In the pastry section of the menu are savoury quiches and tarts like chocolate tart and sea salt caramel tart. Tempting cakes (ranging from $6 to $8 per slice) include devil’s food caramel cake, lava cake and banana tarte cake.

It would appear that their signature Le Croissant ($2.80) is still a hot favourite. When we were there in the late afternoon, the item was sold out. A fresh batch was being made.

We selected the Blueberry Streusel Danish ($3.20) and Hazelnut Praline Croissant ($3.20). A cup of Americano coffee was $4. The Danish, with buttery layers of pastries and a crumbly topping of flour, butter and blueberries, was a simple delight. The Croissant was rich, buttery and fluffy. The coffee in their signature bright yellow cup was good too. It was smooth and creamy with a slightly acidic nutty flavour.

Bread & Hearth Katong V is a great new addition to the rich food scene of Katong. It is spacious and a very pleasant comfortable spot for breakfast, coffee or a simple light meal. The coffee is good and there is a wide range of bread, pastries and cakes. The nice scent of baking bread may be missing but the bread and pastries are as good as those in the Keong Siak bakery.
