Waku Ghin Cakes at RISE Lounge, MBS

Waku Ghin cakes are sold at the new Patisserie Platine, which takes up a small booth in the RISE Lounge of Marina Bay Sands (MBS). RISE Lounge is the flying saucer shaped space that is adjacent to the enormous RISE Restaurant that serves buffet meals on the ground floor of the MBS Singapore hotel.

We stopped by the MBS lobby cafe just for a drink. But being victims of marketing, we felt that we had to try some of the items on display when we saw that the desserts at the Patisserie Platine were creations of Waku Ghin. We had not had the chance to try the Japanese cuisine at the Waku Ghin restaurant which some regard as the best restaurant in Singapore. For now, we will have to make do with just their cakes. That was how we ended up eating Waku Ghin cakes at RISE Lounge, MBS.

All the attractive looking desserts were calling out to us, but we had to be firm and stick to two pieces to avoid further expanding our waistline. We settled on a Coconut Mousse with Mango & Passion Fruit (CocoMMP) and a Matcha Opera ($10 each).

The Matcha Opera cake had an interesting mix of the taste of matcha tea and coffee. The texture was also interesting – light spongy bits with some crunchy ones. The CocoMMP was even better. Hidden inside the cute yellow was an internal compartment that contained various fillings. There was a lot of fruity flavours cramped into this small dome. The texture was light and creamy.

The cakes were not inexpensive and the $7.50 and $6.50 charged for the cappuccino and black coffee respectively was on the high side. But those were not cakes and coffee at just any place but at the ritzy lobby lounge of Marina Bay Sands of Singapore. Somebody has to pay for the huge atrium airspace and the musicians playing classical Chinese music that mostly goes unappreciated. Having drinks in a big, comfortable space and watching hundreds of people passing by is fascinating. Eating Waku Ghin Cakes at RISE Lounge, MBS on a warm Singapore afternoon can be something we can get used to.
