One Harbour Road is one of the best Chinese restaurants in Hong Kong well known for its traditional homestyle Cantonese cuisine. It is the favourite Cantonese restaurant of many locals and it is not unusual to spot a celebrity or two there. Their dishes feature a lot of premium ingredients but there are also simple comfort food. On our recent trip to Hong Kong, we were fortunate to be able to have dinner at One Harbour Road. We could understand why it continues to be one of the city’s top destinations for traditional Cantonese fare.
Located in The Grand Hyatt Hotel, One Harbour Road is an elegant restaurant which offers a great view of the Victoria Harbour. The split-level restaurant is decorated to resemble a mansion in Shanghai during the 1930s complete with an indoor fountain. The place has an airy feel and a cozy home ambience.
The menu is extensive and offers a wide variety of popular Cantonese dishes. Here are pictures of some pages of the menu of One Harbour Road.
Our first dish for dinner was Peking duck, which was pre-ordered. The duck was expertly carved by the staff in front of us. The crisp skin of the duck was served with cucumber, spring onion and sweet sauce with the usual blanket of thin pancake. The meat of the duck was minced and fried and served on fresh crunchy cabbage leaves. It was a wonderful start to dinner.
The next dish was the steamed Patagonian toothfish (or seabass) with preserved vegetables. The fish had a fresh taste and was silky smooth. The dish reminded us of the Singapore chwee kueh. It was enjoyable.
Our next dish was a simple healthy one – dow miao stir-fired with garlic. The vegetables were crunchy and juicy.
The final dish was the steamed egg and preserved duck egg custard with dried shrimps. It was an unusual dish. The texture was smooth like the typical egg custard but there was complexity to the taste. It was an interesting and delicious dish.
We ended the dinner on a sweet note with deep fried fermented beancurd pastries with lotus puree. They were delightful.
One Harbour Road has an understated luxurious ambience. The service was top notch. The menu was extensive and the food was well presented and delicious. It is easy to understand why it is well loved by the locals. One Harbour Road is definitely one of the best Chinese restaurants we have tried in Hong Kong.
