Queen and Mangosteen restaurant and bar at Vivo City

Queen and Mangosteen is a restaurant and bar at Vivo City that is styled after the British pub.    It is however,  not just any ordinary English pub in Singapore. Queen and Mangosteen is described as a “Gourmet British Pub” on their website and “… the quality of food that it serves is beyond the regular expectation of Pub Food”. They also have some $15.90 lunch time specials that looked interesting and so we stopped by to try them.

Some parts of Queen and Mangosteen do have the look and feel of an English pub, with the dark space and wood / leather furniture. But as we ventured towards the scenic end of the space,  it became less ‘pub-like’. These are the brighter seating areas and an outdoor area that looks out to the sea and Sentosa island.

Four options were available for the lunch specials. We selected the Chic Masala, Snapper in a Parcel and Holy Crab Angel Hair Pasta. Here are pictures of the lunch menu and some pages from the regular Queen and Mangosteen menu.

Two of us opted for the endless flow of soft drinks for $1 each. The remaining one thinks that it is essential to drink beer in a pub and ordered a Belgian Wit ($13 / pint).

The mushroom soup was as good if not better than those served in proper restaurants, let alone pubs.

The snapper in a panel was a innovatively presented dish. Who would not like a dish served in a packet like this. Pieces of baked snapper and cubes of rice cakes were served in some mildly spicy broth. The taste reminded us somewhat of lontong. The fish was a bit dry but the packaging was sufficiently attractive to distract us from its shortcomings.

The Holy Crab Angel Hair Pasta was an average serving of pasta.

The Chic Masala was a serving of chicken in masala curry, a bowl of rice and a cup of papadums. The rice and papadam was nice and perfect with the beer. The chicken was ok but the spicy level was too low. Other than that this was a good dish.

Overall, a pleasant lunch at the Queen and Mangosteen. The food was more varied that what we would expect from a typical pub.  The taste of the food was good but we could not agree as to we would describe it as gourmet food. But if the objective is to find a place at Vivo City for happy hour and some nice food to go with the drinks, we can’t think of a better place.  They have some nice deals for drinks when the sun goes down.
