Jalan Sultan Prawn Mee – one of the best prawn noodles soup

The name Jalan Sultan Prawn Mee 惹蘭蘇丹蝦麺 will almost always be mentioned when there is a discussion about the best prawn noodles in Singapore. There are many contenders for the best prawn mee in Singapore but the soup version of Jalan Sultan prawn noodles remains our favourite.

Jalan Sultan Prawn Mee at Kallang

Just like the popular Beach Road Prawn Mee Eating House is not in Beach Road but in East Coast Road, is not in Jalan Sultan but in Jalan Ayer. Located just off Geylang Lorong 1, it is within walking distance of Kallang MRT station. There are a few street parking lots outside the eating house and there is quite a large public carpark just across the road.

Jalan Sultan Prawn Mee is a non-air conditioned no frills eating place. The tables are numbered. You note your table number and order and pay at the cashier’s counter and the food will be served to your table. The menu is straightforward – different combinations of prawns, king prawns, pork ribs and noodles. There is a stall there selling ngoh hiang.

We went to Jalan Sultan Prawn Mee for lunch and ordered a dry version of Prawn Mee ($6) and the soup version of Pork Ribs Prawn Mee (5$). The noodles were served within about 5 minutes.

The dry version of the Prawn Mee came with chilli on the side of the bowl and a small bowl of broth. The prawns came in 2 sizes and were fresh and sweet. We opted to have a combination of  yellow noodle and bee hoon. They were well cooked to a good texture, not under-cooked but not too soft. The savoury sauce was mild; nice but not as intense and flavourful compared to the Beach Road version.

The Pork Ribs Prawn Mee also had prawns of different sizes as well as a few pieces of pork ribs. The pork was tender. The rich broth makes the soup version of the noodles at Jalan Sultan Prawn Mee distinct from those found in other stalls. The broth is mildly sweet and tangy and has a robust flavour. A hot bowl of the prawn noodles soup is very satisfying.

The debate as to where to find the best prawn mee in Singapore will doubtless go on and on. Our current favourite for the dry version is at Beach Road Prawn Mee Eating House; and for the soup version at Jalan Sultan Prawn Mee.
