There are not many Mexican restaurants in Singapore. Mexican cuisine is also not something that often comes to mind when the time comes to decide where to eat. As it has been some time since our last visit to a Mexican restaurant in Singapore, we thought it was time to have some Mexican for lunch. We headed for the El Mero Mero Mexican Restaurant in CHIJMES, just across the road from Raffles City.
El Mero Mero Mexican Restaurant has one of the best locations in the CHIJMES dining enclave. It is on the ground level and has a central location facing the courtyard. It has a perfect view of the curved end of the Gothic style chapel of the former Convent of the Holy Infant Jesus. The chapel is now used as a multi-purpose hall named CHIJMES Hall.
On a weekend and with good weather, the well-manicured lawn in front of the restaurant was full of activity. Children playing, people were sitting on the grass. Some came prepared with picnic materials. The view from El Mero Mero was not only scenic but also most interesting as a people-watching vantage point. We liked the view so much that we decided to depart from our usual preference for air-conditioned dining and chose to sit outdoors.
El Mero Mero Menu
Here are pictures of the El Mero Mero Menu and Drinks List. We selected three dishes, each from a different section of the menu.
First things first. The most appropriate drink at a Mexican restaurant on a hot day has to be a Corona beer ($9.90 happy hour price).
The crunchy fish tacos ($16) were nicely presented. The fish content was not very high. It was the taco shell and vegetables providing most of the taste. A pleasant dish, but we would have liked it more if the presence of the fish was more noticeable.
The best dish of the day was the El Mero Mero enchiladas ($29). The menu describes it as “Grilled Chicken, Rice, Beans, Cheese, Sour Cream, Red Salsa in Flour Tortilla”. To be honest, other than the chicken, I could not detect the taste of those items individually, but the whole lot blended very well. Each mouthful was full of flavours. This is certainly a dish we will order again.
The final dish – tiger prawn tempura tortilla was the most beautiful. The taste of prawn was almost drowned out by the sheer quantity of cabbage piled on top of it. Like the first dish, the overall flavour was good, but the lead actor, the prawn, did not stand out.
Overall, lunch at El Mero Mero Mexican Restaurant at CHIJMES was a pleasant occassion. With a location and view like that, just being there is an experience in itself.
