Lunch at Taste Paradise Dynasty Westgate – casual Chinese restaurant in Jurong East

It has just dawned on me that the restaurant group formerly known as Taste Paradise has dropped the word “Taste” from their name. On their official website they are now simply known as the Paradise Group. Within the Paradise Group, there are different categories of restaurants. The Taste Paradise Dynasty class of restaurants seems to have a focus on northern Chinese cuisine. They also have the colourful xiao long bao as one of the main attractions on the menu.  We had lunch at Paradise Dynasty Westgate recently.

The decor of Paradise Dynasty Westgate is done up in a traditional restaurant style. The use of dark wood gave the place a cosy feel. Different seating arrangements are available for different group sizes.

Here are a couple of portions from the Paradise Dynasty Westgate Menu. The colourful xiao long baos look very attractive and tempting.  But we resisted and decided to go for the less costly normal Signature Original xiao long bao and a few other dishes.

The xiao long bao ($7.80 for 6 pieces) were not very consistent in their appearance. The taste and texture of the skin and contents were not bad.  We thought that they would be better if the stuffing in the dumplings had a less porky flavour.

We tried another type of dumplings – pork dumpling in hot chili vinaigrette ($6.80 for 6).  We enjoyed this better. Perhaps the spicy sauce drowned out any trace of ‘porkiness’.  The balance of spiciness and sourness was also good. We would order this again.

The la mian with spiced beef in Signature Pork Bone Soup ($11.80) was average in terms of taste.  It was served in a large bowl, which raised our expectations. The contents were modest in quantity, relative to the bowl size.

Our final dish of Wok Fried Rice Cake with Pork and Vegetable, Shanghai Style ($11.80) was a more interesting dish. The bouncy texture of the slices of rice cake was delightful. The sauce was tasty.  This is a dish we are happy to recommend. Overall, Paradise Dynasty Westgate is a pleasant place to have a Chinese meal especially of you like dishes from northern China.
