During our visit to Bangkok, there were times when we wanted a break from the rich Thai food, the elaborate meals. For the sake of the stomach and the budget as well as to get a balanced dining experience in Bangkok, we do try to look for simple meals in between the big ones. One of the places we found for a quick meal in Bangkok was BKK Bagels. It is a small cafe specialising in bagels and coffee in a convenient location in Bangkok. Not quite a hole in the wall, but a cozy place for a quick bite.
BKK Bagels is located in a small shopping mall named Maneeya Center along Ploenchit Road, near the Chit Lom BTS station. The dining area is small but the open kitchen was sizeable. Perhaps takeaways form a big part of their business.
The decor is plain and basic, but therein lies the appeal to us when taking a break from complicated restaurants. This small cafe is not visible from the main road but people seem to know how to find it. There was a constant flow of customers – a mix of well-dressed office workers and casually dressed visitors. BKK Bagels is on the ground floor at the side of the building facing the car park.
Here are pictures of the menu at BKK Bagels. They have a wide range of bagels and sandwiches. Some of the sandwiches were quite elaborate such as the “Show Stopper” made with houseroasted turkey, cheese, bacon, avocado spread, mustard.” You can see beautiful pictures of them on their Instagram.
Staying true to our purpose of getting a simple meal, we resisted the beautiful items, opting instead for just simple bagels and coffee. Each bagel comes with a choice of cheese cream spread, which BKK Bagels refer to as the uniquely flavored, handmade “schmears.”
We had a poppy seed bagel with scallion cheese spread (80 baht) and a sesame seed bagel with sun-dried tomato spread (80 baht) with macha latte (70 baht) and cappuccino (65 baht).
Each bagel was dense and heavy. One simple bagel was more than enough as a meal for each of us. The cheese spreads were nicely flavoured with the toppings – both the scallions and sun-dried tomatoes added a burst of flavour to the plain-ness of the bagel/cheese combination. The coffee and macha latte was fine but quite ordinary. Service was friendly and helpful.
