Komyuniti Yotel Hotel Singapore – hidden cafe in the heart of Orchard Road

We had the Komyuniti cafe all to ourselves when we visited it recently. It is located in the Yotel Singapore, a hotel just behind Shaw Centre. Very close to Orchard Road and yet hidden from view. If I am a tourist in Singapore, this is the kind of hotel I like – smallish, modern, centrally located but not on the main street. Surrounded by restaurants but has its own quiet restaurant if I decide to dine in. Komyuniti restaurant has a friendly welcoming look from the lift lobby.

In case our readers are not familiar with the Yotel Hotel (as we were before this visit) here are some pictures of it.

I believe Komyuniti used to be known as “Grains and Hops”. It is located on level 10 of Yotel Hotel and right next to the rooftop swimming pool. Food and drinks can be served to guests lounging by the poolside. It is a bright and modern restaurant. My guess is that it is probably busiest during breakfast time. We were there at around lunchtime and were the only diners in the indoor area. Some hotel guests were at the poolside, enjoying the 36 degree tropical weather.

Komyuniti Yotel Menu

Here are pictures of the Komyuniti Menu. It is a simple menu with mostly snacks and light food to go with drinks. We tried a couple of the dishes – Salmon Poké ($13) and Teriyaki Chicken Rice Bowl ($18).

Salmon Poké

The Salmon Poké looked interesting. Marinated cubes of salmon were served with home-made chilli sauce and soy. They were meant to be eaten with the keropok (fried onion crackers). This was a pleasant and unusual dish of finger food. It will go well with a beer at the poolside.

For something more substantial, we selected the Teriyaki Chicken Rice Bowl from the “Chef’s Favourites” section of the menu. The Rice Bowl turned out to be quite predictable – just teriyaki sauce roast chicken placed on top of steamed rice with a soft-boiled egg.

For a restaurant in a bold modern hotel, we were expecting something out of the ordinary. The food that we tried at Komyuniti Yotel turned out to be quite safe. Which is probably the sensible thing to do as it has to please many people from diverse cultures. We would probably return, but not on account of the food, but the serenity. This looks like a good place to go if you need to meet up in a nice place but with some privacy. Headhunters or employers meeting up with their potential hires may find this place conducive.

By the way, they have a deal for the forthcoming Administrative Professionals Week. $30 sounds like a fair deal to dine in a nice place in Orchard Road.

Nothing in the world is permanent, and we’re foolish when we ask anything to last, but surely we’re still more foolish not to take delight in it while we have it.
