Located in the basement of Tangs department store, this compact food court is a hidden gem for those hunting for affordable food in Orchard Road. Tangs Market is clean and comfortable and has stalls offering a good representative sample of Malaysian and Singaporean hawker food.
Tangs Market is simply but nicely decorated. They try to squeeze in as many tables as possible but the place is still more comfortable than most other food courts and eateries with comparable price range in the Orchard Road area. The food court is a convenient place to sample the delicacies of popular stalls from various parts of Singapore and even Malaysia. One can sit in air-conditioned comfort right in Orchard Road and enjoy Tiong Bahru chwee kueh, Queenstown popiah or Redhill Teochew fishball noodles. Without even having to go to Malaysia, one can savour Johor pau, Penang chendol and Klang bak kut teh.
Below are photos of the various stalls in Tangs Market and some of the food we have tried.
Koo Kee
Koo Kee is famous for their Yong Tow Foo Mee. Their Yong Tow Foo – which consisted of Tau Hu, Tau Pok, Tau Kuah, Tau Kee and Fishball – is simple comfort food. The thin egg noodles topped with just minced meat might look plain and simple but they were delicious even without anything else added to them. Add the secret recipe sweet sauce and chilli sauce, the the noodles would be even more enjoyable.
KL Claypot Rice
Claypot Chicken Rice is one of the most popular Chinese dishes in Kuala Lumpur.
The KL Claypot Rice stall in Tangs market serves a good version of the famous Kuala Lumpur delicacy. The prepared to order claypot rice is fragrant and flavourful. There is a fairly generous portion of chicken and Chinese sausages. Those looking for affordable food in Orchard Road should find the claypot rice a satisfying one dish meal.
Queenstown Traditional Popiah
Queenstown Traditional Popiah in Tangs Market serves popiah (spring rolls) and kueh pie tee made to order.
We tried their rojak. With fruits, vegetables and fried beancurd mixed with sticky prawn paste sauce and a generous sprinkling of crush peanuts, the rojak was a riot of tastes and textures – exciting and delightful.
Tiong Bahru Chwee Kueh
The chwee kuey was excellent. The steamed rice cake was smooth and bouncy. The preserved vegetable (chai poh) topping was well fried and had a good robust flavour. The chilli spicy and tasty and delivered a good kick.
Redhill Teochew Fishball Noodle
The fishball noodles looked very simple but were delicious. The noodles, whether yellow noodles or rice noodles, were cooked to perfection and there were 2 variety of fishballs, which had great texture.
Penang Chendol & Ban Chang Kuih
The chendol and ban chang kuih (thin cripsy pancakes with various toppings) are traditional cheap and good desserts.

People’s Park Sugar Cane Juice is the drinks stall in Tangs Market. It also serves local coffee and other typical kopitiam items.
