Fishworks Marylebone, Seafood Restaurant in London

Fishworks Marylebone is a fishmonger and a seafood restaurant in London. The front of the shop is the fishmonger section where fish, oysters etc are displayed for sale. The inner part of the space is a restaurant. It looked like a nice place to eat and so we had our dinner there.

These are pictures of the fishmonger section of FIshworks Marylebone. It looks like the fish section of a supermarket in Singapore. Except that there is little or no fishy smell. I think the cool weather helps the fish stay fresher.

The Fishworks Marylebone restaurant section is a long and narrow space behind the retail area. We were there for dinner and it was full. It seems like a popular fish restaurant in Marylebone. It is located on Marylebone High Street, near the Monocle Cafe that we wrote about a few days ago. Among the attractions along this road are the Daunt Bookskop and The Conran Shop at the northern end. Also in the area is the house at 221B Baker Street which is featured in the Sherlock tv series.

Here are pictures of portions of the Fishworks Marylebone menu and wine list. There is a section for Maritime Wines. These are made from grapes grown near the coast which apparently gives the wine a slight saltiness.

We tried three kinds of seafood at Fishworks – scallops, lobster and fish. The sautéed scallops (£15) were cooked with white wine and garlic butter and topped with bread crumbs. We found the seasoning too strong such that the natural sweetness of the scallop was lost. The butter and crumbs became the dominant taste.

The grilled lobster (£36) was smaller than we expected. Other than that, it was a good straightforward grilled lobster dish.

The best dish of the day was the grilled daily catch. The seabass fillet £17 was grilled to perfection. The meat was pure white and clean tasting. Like the lobster, we were glad that there was hardly any embellishments. A good seafood dish only needs a bit of salt and pepper, and perhaps a squeeze of lemon.

A good selection of white wines is available at Fishworks, many of them served by the glass or carafes. The Pouilly Fume (£29 for a 500ml carafe) was a good choice for the varied types of seafood that we had that evening.
