SPRMRKT in the Singapore Tyler Print Institute (STPI) building in Robertson Quay along the Singapore River is now simply known as SPRMRKT at STPI. It used to occupy two storeys and had two concepts – a more casual SPRMRKT Daily and a posh SPRMRKT Kitchen ). SPRMRKT at STPI now only operates on the ground level but it means that diners will have a nice view of the river. The all day dining cafe opens early and is a great place for breakfast or brunch by the river.
SPRMRKT at STPI
SPRMRKT (spelt without the vowels but still pronounced as ‘Supermarket’) currently has two outlets : SPRMRKT at Cluny Court and SPRMRKT at STPI. The Robertson Quay outlet occupies the ground level of a heritage building by the river. The patio dining area is right by the leafy promenade next to the upper reaches of Singapore River where there are warehouses and historical buildings that were constructed as early as the 1880s. Enjoying a meal there is quite an unique experience in Singapore.
For those who prefer to avoid the hot and humid conditions of daytime Singapore, SPRMRKT at STPI has a small air-conditioned dining area indoors. There are a few small tables as well a a bar counter.
SPRMRKT Menu
The website of SPRMRKT says that the menu offers “traditional European cuisine flecked with Southeast Asian produce”. The menu is not extensive but has sufficient variety. Here are pictures of pages from the simple menu of SPRMRKT at STPI Robertson Quay.
Brunch by the River
We went back to SPRMRKT at STPI recently for a leisurely brunch by the river is one of the little indulgences we rather enjoy. We had a memorable experience dining in the river town of Bamberg. Dining by the Singapore River is not quite the same thing but a very agreeable substitute nonetheless.
We asked for an Americano ($4.50) and Cappuccino ($5) and ordered the Fluffy Buttermilk Pancakes ($17) and Avocado & Toast ($16). The wait for the food was not long – less than 15 minutes. The food was simply but nicely plated.
The Fluffy Buttermilk Pancakes comprised a stack of 3 pancakes servec with Kurobuta pork sausage, sunny side up egg and bacon. SPRMRKT’s light and airy buttermilk pancakes were simple comfort food that looked appealing and tasted as you would expect. The bacon was crisp and tasty. The sausage was juicy and tender and rich in flavours.
Avocado & Toast were served with tomato relish, pickled shallots and sunny side up eggs. Avocado slices sat on top of a slice of rustic crusty bread. It was a mix of creamy and crispy, savoury and tangy. It was a dish that was easy on the eyes and satisfying for the palate.
We had good quality food at reasonable prices SPRMRKT at STPI. The coffee at was quite good too. SPRMRKT at STPI’s unique location adds to its character and laid-back charm. Our brunch by the river was an enjoyable one.
