Donburi King is another new Japanese restaurant in PLQ Mall. It is the latest concept by S.H.E Global Group, the team behind the popular Tengawa Hokkaido White Curry at Millenia Walk. As is evident from the name, the new restaurant specialises in “domburi” or Japanese rice bowl dish featuring seafood and a selection of meat.
Donburi King in PLQ Mall is a small casual eatery that can seat less than 20 diners. There are seats at the counter and a few small tables. The decor and furnishing are basic but you will know that it is a Japanese restaurant.
Donburi King Menu
There is a self-ordering system at Donburi King. You order and pay at one of the two digital screens outside the restaurant and then you take a seat. The food will be served to you. The wait for our food was not too long.
Seafood and rice bowls are the main items on the menu. There are, however, a variety of side dishes like ebi fry, tako balls, sesame chicken wings and fried oysters. Salad and ramen are also on the menu. Below are pictures of a few pages of the menu of Donburi King.
Lunch at Donburi King
We visited Donburi King at PLQ Mall for lunch and ordered the Maguro Akami Don ($19.80) and Kubaku Chicken Katsu Don ($16.80). The rice bowls were served with miso soup.
The Maguro Akami Don looked like a floral arrangement. The rice could not be seen at all; it was completely covered by the red lean cuts of tuna sashimi. The fairly thick slices of maguro akami were lean, firm and meaty and had mild flavours. There was a slight sweetness and a bit of soy sauce would enhance the enjoyment of the sashimi. They went very well with the rice.
The Kubaku Chicken Katsu Don had sort of the “just woke up disheveled look”. It had sauce, sesame seeds, onions, scallions and eggs over the deep fried chicken cutlet and rice. The chicken was tender and the sweet savoury sauce was delectable. The rice bowl was a nice balanced meal that was very palatable.
Quality & Tasty Food
The restaurant is small and it feels like a place where the lunch crowd will just eat and run. However, the prices are not quite at the level that will attract the average office lunch crowd. The food at Donburi King that we tried was good though. For those who are not too particular about a restaurant’s ambience and are prepared to pay a bit more for tasty quality Japanese food, Donburi King at PLQ Mall will not be a bad option at all.
