“Those were such happy times and not so long ago … but they’re back again just like a long lost friend”. If you know these lyrics, you may remember the humble beginnings of the Han’s Cafe in the Arcade at Raffles Place. Over time, they have expanded their network of outlets in Singapore but it is the Han’s Hainanese pork chop and beef hor fun that remain our favourites at Han’s. The latest outlet, the new Han’s Cafe TripleOne Somerset (111 Somerset) looks modern but we were glad that the food remained mostly the same. It is 2020. We should be in flying cars, but we are not. And we are still eating the same food as in 1980.

Han’s Cafe Triple One Somerset Menu
Here are pictures of the menu at Han’s Cafe Triple One Somerset. We were looking for something new, but there were no surprises. The mix of Western dishes like pasta, burgers and local favourites provide a link to the past. It was easy to decide what to eat at Han’s Cafe.

Although the menu has not changed much, there are some touches of modernity at the restaurant. The decor is bright and contemporary. A digital board indicated the order numbers that had been prepared and were ready for collection. A bit too much like the Polyclinic but it is probably more efficient than deploying the buzzer system. The cakes in the chiller also looked traditional, especially the black forest cake.

Han’s Hainanese Pork Chop Set

We ordered the Han’s Hainanese Pork Chop set that costs $13. It comes with a drink, soup and toast. The soup of the day was pumpkin soup and was quite ordinary. But the pork chop was still great. They have really kept it consistent over the years. Sometimes the gravy is a bit too sour, but it is mostly the same. It is strange that a rice dish would be paired with a Western style soup and toast to make up a meal. But that is the way it is.

Han’s Beef Hor Fun
The other dish that we tend to order very often is the beef hor fun ($9.80). It is a substantial dish. The dark meaty gravy is the secret of the dish. It will make anything taste great. With the hor fun drenched in the sauce and topped with beef slices and vegetables, it is an evergreen comfort food.
