Baba Chews is the all day dining restaurant of boutique Hotel Indigo in Katong Square. It serves Western, local and Mod-Sin dishes and had special promotions and deals from time to time. Currently it has special takeaway bento sets starting from $9 and a OCBC Card Take-Away Exclusive: 1 for 1 Main Course from $18.
Baba Chews Katong
We had visited Baba Chews previously. You can read our post Baba Chews Katong Square for more information about the restaurant.
Even before the “Circuit Breaker” was imposed in Singapore, Baba Chews had takeout and delivery options. It has since introduced more special promotions that will run till 1 June 2020. For example it offers free delivery with minimum order of $80 (inclusive of GST) and new takeaway bento sets starting from $9.
OCBC Card 1 for 1 Mains Takeaway
There is an ongoing promotion which will run till 30 June – the OCBC Take-Away Exclusive: 1 for 1 Main Course.
The promotion requires us to take some unusual steps. We have to go online to select the preferred collection date and time. There is no option to choose the dishes at that stage. We then have to wait for the restaurant’s staff to contact us. The order is placed with the staff over the phone. We then head down to the restaurant for collection and payment.
The dishes available for 1 For 1 Main Course promotion when we were placing our order were as follows:
– Ayam Buah Keluak Burger $18++
– Black Pepper ‘Meatless’ Burger $22++
– Blackened Fish & Chips $22++
– Chicken Rendang Lasagne $18++
– ‘Chilli Crab’ Tagliatelle $20++
– X.O. Pork Belly Char Siew Rice Bowl $19++
Char Siew Rice Bowl & Free Lasagne
We ordered Chicken Rendang Lasagne and X.O. Pork Belly Char Siew Rice Bowl. That meant that we had to pay only for the higher priced item – the Char Siew Rice Bowl – $19 plus GST.
When I arrived at Baba Chews at the appointed time, the food was packed and ready for collection.
The chicken rendang lasagne did not look anything like the nicely plated lasagne in the poster but the char siew rice in a paper bowl looked quite good.
Chicken rendang lasagne is Mod-Sin, or modern Singaporean, cuisine, a term which has come to mean giving Western dishes a twist by adding local flavours. So chicken rendang is used for Italian lasagne, instead of the traditional ragu sauce. Baba Chews’ chicken rendang lasagne was delicious. The minced chicken with rendang sauce was rich and aromatic and not too spicy.
The X.O. pork belly char siew rice bowl was a straightforward dish that was well done. The rice was not just plain steamed rice but more like Hainanese chicken rice. The char siew had a nice balance between lean meat and fatty portions with a level of sweetness that was just right.
Good 1 for 1 Deal
$19 is quite a lot to pay for char siew rice, even when it is a delicious dish with a fairly generous cut of quality barbecued pork. However, with the 1 for 1 takeaway promotion, each dish is effectively only about $10. The 1 for 1 deal presents a good opportunity to try Baba Chews’ interesting Mod-Sin mains.
