Wine and Dine at Orchard Road

(Dining section closed)

It is time to wine and dine at Orchard Road again. After a medical appointment at Mt Elizabeth, it is only natural to stop by Paragon for lunch. The Grill by 1855 The Bottle Shop was our choice, partly for its wines and grill and partly because it was quiet. Safe distance was never an issue.

Wine and Dine at Orchard Road

Paragon Orchard is a busy place, even on a weekday. Some lifts and escalators are closed. Visitors are funnelled to enter or exit at selected points. Despite these obstacles, visitors to this popular mall are not deterred. Parking charges are not cheap and we learnt the hard way that the parking fee redemption only starts after 5 pm under the current rules.

The Grill by 1855 The Bottle Shop is a wine shop and a restaurant. It provided us with a peaceful place to wine and dine at Orchard Road. An escape from the frantic activities outside.

The wines take centrestage at the restaurant at the basement level of Paragon. A couple of wines were highlighted to us, including a bottle of 2009 Chateau Coudert ($62). I am not familiar with this wine but since 2009 was a good year for Bordeaux generally, it seemed like a safe choice.

As for the food, there is quite a good range of items. We picked a beef mignon ($28) and a half rack of lamb ($32) to go with the wine. Grilled asparagus ($8), mushroom croquettes ($6) and pan-seared cod provided more variety. A 15% promotional discount was available. Here is a picture of the food menu.

Here are pictures of our wine and dine at Orchard Road outing. The two appetisers were the best – the croquettes and the asparagus were simple yet enjoyable. As for the wine, it was quite average and not as fruity or matured as we had expected.

The meat items were substantial dishes. They do not have the rich flavours of more premium cuts of steak or lamb, but good enough for us, especially at the prices charged. We can’t think of a better place to to have a nice, affordable steak and wine meal on Orchard Road than here.

The pan-seared cod was a break from the rest of the meat dishes. But the texture of the cod was soft and not very appealing. I think we should stick to the red meat dishes in the future.
