Jian Bo Shui Kueh – chwee kueh & much more

Jian Bo Shui Kueh is a well known and popular chwee kueh stall in Tiong Bahru Market. Today Jian Bo Tiong Bahru Shui Kueh can be found all over Singapore; and it sells much more than just the traditional rice cakes.

The popular hawker stall has been selling shui kueh or chwee kueh in Tiong Bahru since the middle of last century. Jian Bo still has a stall on level 2 of the Tiong Bahru Market & Food Centre, where the traditional white rice cakes with preserved radish (chye poh) and signature dried prawn chili are served simply on a piece of waxed paper.

Local Delights in Many Locations

Jian Bo Tiong Bahru Shui Kueh can now be found in many locations. The chwee kueh stall has kiosks in various malls and places where it has outlets include Admiralty, Bishan, Bukit Panjang, Hougang Jurong and Sengkang. It now also offers a good range of local snack food like paus, chee cheong fun, bak changs and nyonya kuehs.

Shui Kueh, Chee Cheong Fun & Chang

We were at Marine Parade Hawker Centre recently and bought some snacks from Jian Bo Tiong Bahru Shui Kueh.

The chwee kueh ($2.80 for 5 pieces) did not disappoint. The rice cakes had a nice texture – not too soft and not sticky. The generous toppings of fragrant chai poh and chilli reminded us of the good old days – when simple affordable food brought so much satisfaction.

The chee cheong fun was also rather good. The rice rolls were silky. The red sweet sauce was the old school type and a bit thin. The chilli was very nice.

The bak chang, we were given to understand, were be supplied by Joo Chiat Kim Choo Nyonya Dumpling (not to be confused with Kim Choo Kueh Chang). It was average – not bad but not a must try for us.

Jian Bo Shui Kueh Takeaway & Delivery

Jian Bo Tiong Bahru Shui Kueh has kept up with the times and is geared up for takeaway and delivery. Chwee kueh for takeaway are packed nicely in containers with separate compartments for the chye poh and chilli.
