The best espresso and pastries at home or in the office somehow never bring as much joy as the real cafe experience. There is just no substitute for leisurely drinking coffee in a quaint little cafe like Alchemist HQ @ Khong Guan Building.
Khong Guan Building
Alchemist coffee has a loyal following among the folks in the CBD. Besides outlets in International Plaza, Hong Leong Building and Change Alley Mall, there are also Alchemist @ Design Orchard and Alchemist @ The Mill. The most interesting outlet is Alchemist HQ @ Khong Guan Building in Tai Seng.
The flagship store of Alchemist sits on the first floor of the refurbished Khong Guan Building that won the 2018 Award for Restoration and Innovation from The Architectural Heritage Award (AHA).
The Khong Guan Biscuit Factory, a three-storey modernist structure, predates Singapore’s independence. The iconic ship-like building is a Singapore landmark worth a visit in its own right. The building was featured in Straits Times’ Heritage Spotlight Series.

Menu of Alchemist HQ Khong Guan Building
The menu of Alchemist @ Khong Guan Building is simple and straightforward – coffee and pastries. If you go to Alchemist but do not want coffee, there is chocolate.
Coffee Experience at Alchemist HQ
We ordered White Coffee ($5), Mocha ($5.50), Almond Croissant ($4.50) and Forest Berries Danish ($5).
The pastries were nice. The almond croissant was lightly dusted with icing sugar and the almond cream was delicious. It had flaky and buttery layers. The croissant was substantial and could be the main of a meal.
The forest berries Danish had flaky puff pastry with a buttery texture. The berries were sweet and refreshing. The Danish was enjoyable.
The coffee was very good. The white coffee was smooth and creamy and full of robust flavours. The cafe mocha was a lovely mix of chocolate and coffee. It was well balanced and had a strong enough roasted coffee flavour that would perk you up.
Wonderful Cafe Experience
The cafe crew were friendly and the service was excellent. With the beautiful space and great coffee, everything added up to make our visit to Alchemist HQ @ Khong Guan Building a wonderful cafe experience.
