The Katong-Joo Chiat neighbourhood, well known for its traditional cuisine like Katong laksa, bak chang and Peranakan food, is becoming a fashionable precinct for the chic cafe crowd. The new Prairie By Craftsmen Cafe in Joo Chiat joins the list of trendy cafes and bakeries that have opened in the area recently.
Prairie By Craftsmen in Joo Chiat
Prairie By Craftsmen opened its first outlet in Cluny Court not too long ago. It has since added a branch in River Valley and a third outlet in Katong. The new Prairie By Craftsmen in Katong occupies the ground level of two shophouses along Joo Chiat Road. It is located just next to Sinpopo. NineThirty and Homeground are just across the road.
There are two dining areas at the cafe in Joo Chiat – a naturally ventilated veranda-like area in front and an indoor air-conditioned space.
The new Prairie cafe has an aesthetically pleasing interior design with a blue and orange colour palette. It is not big but it has little nooks and corners which add to its charm and cosiness.

Brunch at Prairie By Craftsmen Cafe
We visited the new cafe for brunch recently and opted for the Sausage & Bacon ($18) and Red Pesto Pasta ($21). We also ordered a flat white and a long black ($5 each).
The Sausage & Bacon came with a choice of egg, and was served with sourdough bread and a good helping of salad. It was fairly typical cafe brunch fare. Comfort food without fuss.
The pasta dish was probably a healthier dish. It looked good. It did not disappoint in terms of taste. We liked the texture of the linguine and the sauce was rich in flavour with the right level of spiciness.
The best thing about eating at Prairie by Craftsmen Joo Chiat would be the drinking – drinking coffee. Their coffee was aromatic and smooth and had vibrant, rich flavours.
The pastries looked enticing in the display case. We got a croissant and coffee to takeaway.
