The new Binary Restaurant at Palais Renaissance Singapore is one of several restaurants that opened in this posh shopping mall at Orchard Road. We had lunch at Binary recently.
The Straits Times reported on 4 December that new restaurants are opening up at this part of Orchard Road. Like So France (Orchard Towers), the new Binary Restaurant brings a breath of fresh air to this part of Singapore. Binary is located on the ground floor of Palais Renaissance. It is a compact restaurant facing Orchard Road. The interior is cosy and there is a small alfresco section outside.
It was almost full house when we were there on a weekday. Dining at Orchard Road is getting very busy these days. It is advisable to make a reservation in advance as there are not many dining seats.
Binary Restaurant Menu
Here are pictures of the Binary food menu as well as part of the drinks menu. Binary has been described as a gastro-bar based on the concept of two in that it takes a binary approach to cuisine with each ingredient being offered in two ways : “… go East or go West as your palate brings you”.
There was an opening lunch promotion when we were there in early December 2021. Not sure whether it is still on.
Our Lunch
Generally the food seems to be designed to be tapas-styled dishes. Mainly small plates which are suitable for sharing and to go with drinks. We can imagine having these dishes (other than the salad) individually as finger food for happy hour drinks The Special Chef’s salad (picture below) that was part of the opening lunch special looked beautiful and tasted good.
The mushroom fritti fries (picture above) were as addictive as French fries but sounds more healthy. Equally attractive was the tomato bruschetta (picture below) which was light and refreshing.
Best dish of the day was the prawns with garlic. A common tapas item in Spanish menus, this one by Binary Restaurant was better than some Spanish restaurants.
We were less enthusiastic about the the chicken tikka kebabs ($18, picture above) which were attractively presented but we thought that the meat tasted too ‘chickeny’. The pork collar (picture below), was well flavoured but the meat was a tad dry. It would probably taste better with some cold beer which we did not have any that day.
Overall, the new Binary restaurant at Palais Renaissance is a welcomed addition to the restaurant scene at this end of Orchard Road. The dishes were creative and different from the usual all day breakfast cafes. Service was friendly and helpful.
