Five Oars Coffee Roasters (FOCR) opened in 2018 along Tanjong Pagar Road, near the junction with Maxwell Road. The hip homegrown cafe then opened a coffee bar at Asia Square Tower 1 and a new cafe in Siglap. The original cafe closed its doors in 2021 but FOCR has rowed back to its birthplace in Tanjong Pagar as Five Oars Coffee Roasters Heritage.
Five Oars Coffee Roasters Heritage
The original FOCR was located at 39 Tanjong Pagar Road. The new Five Oars Coffee Roasters Heritage is at 43 Tanjong Pagar Road, at the junction of Cook Street and Tanjong Pagar Road.
The exterior looks like a proper Melbourne-inspired cafe with red brick walls and outdoor seating.
Its interior has sleek and stylish aesthetics. Departing from the trendy minimalist interiors with white walls, FOCR Heritage has a dark palette to create a sophisticated cafe environment. A variety of seating arrangements are in the two sections of the cafe separated by the barista bar.
Brunch at the new FOCR Heritage
FOCR Heritage has a day menu (available 8.30 am to 5.15 pm) and a night menu, which can be viewed online (see link at the end of the post). Expect the usual brunch fare like Chia Seed Pudding, Avocado & Eggs and Waffles in the day menu. The night menu will offer dishes such as Grilled Octopus Leg, Lamb Ribs, Seafood Paella and Duck Confit Rigatoni.
We visited Five Oars Coffee Roasters Heritage at Tanjong Pagar for brunch recently. We were at once impressed by the interesting interior design as well as the welcoming service crew. There was no pretentious “still or sparkling” or “sustainable filtered water” routine. A bottle of water was on the table – straightforward and simple.
We ordered the Strawberry Field Waffles ($18) and Eggs Your Way ($12 plus $9 for add-ons) with coffee ($4.50 each). The coffee at FOCR was, as usual excellent.
Five Oars sourdough waffles were served with granola, lots of berries and ice cream. It was a pretty dish. The waffles were nice – light and airy, with some crispiness on the outside. The toppings and garnishes made the simple breakfast waffles into an indulgent treat.
Eggs Your Way was housemade bread (sourdough or brioche), eggs, butter and jam. We opted for brioche and sunny-side up and added avocado ($3) and thick-cut bacon ($6). The lightly toasted slices of brioche were soft and delicious. The sliced avocado was ripe and was smooth and buttery. We thought the strip of thick-cut bacon was rather expensive but it was a nice tasty treat. The texture was less crispy than that of the regular-cut bacon but it tasted meaty with some chewiness. It had a flavour combination of smoky, slightly salty and slightly sweet. It certainly made the simple bread and eggs dish much more enjoyable.
Chic venue, friendly service & good coffee
Coffee lovers living or working in the area will be happy to have FOCR back in Tanjong Pagar. Five Oars Coffee Roasters Heritage is a chic venue with friendly service, nice food and good quality coffee.
