Motivated by her daughter Reeyern “Ree”, former property agent, Celine Ng, started Ree And Mummy, a home baking business, during the pandemic. Their Pineapple Cheesecake and Signature Almond Pecan Toffee were popular. Celine left her profession and became a full-time home baker. In February 2022, Ree And Mummy took up residency in Baker X @ Orchard Central, a Far East Organization initiative to give budding home-baking entrepreneurs the opportunity to have the experience of a physical baking studio and cafe. Ree and Mummy are now ready to have their very own cafe – with Ree.Connect by Ree and Mummy at Katong V.

Katong V is a mixed development comprising a 3-storey retail mall and Village Hotel Katong. Those who are older than Ree’s mummy may know the place as the site of the Paramount Hotel. Ree.Connect by Ree and Mummy is located on the road level of the retail mall. A substantial portion of the space is occupied by the baking studio. The cosy dining area can seat about 12.

Pineapple Cheesecake & Lemon Tart Gelato

We visited the newly opened Ree.Connect by Ree and Mummy and had Pineapple Cheesecake ($6.50) and Lemon Tart Gelato ($4) with Americano and Flat White (both $4.50). There was no GST or service charge.

The Pineapple Cheesecake was topped with torched pineapple rings to give it a dramatic appearance. It looked similar to the trendy Basque burnt cheesecake but it had a more interesting taste. The cream cheese had pineapple fibres so the texture was not smooth like the usual cheesecake. There was a mixture of flavours – slightly sweet and slightly tangy. We thought of it like eating lunar new year pineapple tart with cream cheese. It was definitely a cheesecake with a difference. The cheesecake purists may cringe at the idea but we rather enjoyed the pineapple cheesecake.

The Lemon Tart Gelato was also good. The rich creamy lemon gelato had a nice zesty flavour. The bits of pie crust in the gelato added texture and a level of complexity to the taste.

The coffee was brewed using a fancy-looking machine. It was rich and strong. We also enjoyed the little piece of toffee that came with the coffee.
