Gu Zao Ren Taiwan Porridge 古早人 台湾粥

Gu Zao Ren Taiwan Porridge (古早人台湾粥) is a cosy restaurant next to Seng Coffee Bar along Changi Road. With a small compound that offers free parking for a few vehicles, it is a convenient stop for a quick meal in the Changi / Kembangan area.

Gu Zao Ren is a simple restaurant that offers a straightforward dining experience. The only luxury here is the air-conditioning which is always a nice in Singapore.

Despite its small size, the restaurant offers a wide range of food dishes to eat with Taiwan porridge which costs $1 per person with as many refills as you like. Vegetable dishes cost around $8, meat dishes about $12 (for small portions) with some seafood items costing more.

What We Ate With Taiwan Porridge

Taiwan porridge seems to be similar to the watery Teochew style of porridge with distinct grains of rice. The main difference is the addition of chunks of sweet potato. The Gu Zao Ren Taiwan porridge was what we expect it to be – a light comforting sort of food. Most savoury dishes will go well with this kind of porridge. Here are the dishes that we ordered that day.

Gu Zao Ren Taiwan Porridge Review

Pork liver is an acquired taste. For those that like it the claypot pork liver is a good dish. The liver was cooked just right and has a good balance taste with the sauce and garnishes used.

Omelette is always a safe option for Taiwan porridge. We can eat the chai poh omelette ($7) anytime here.

Similarly you can’t go wrong with a lightly fried vegetable dish. The baby kai lan with mixed seafood ($10) was not bad.

Seafood Dishes

We decided to try a fish dish to go with Taiwan porridge. The deep fried golden pomfret ($18) was more expensive than the average seafood dishes there. The fish itself was not very big and was smothered with a thick heavy gravy which totally obscured the natural taste of fish. This was our least favourite dish that day.

We had mixed feelings about the fried clams ($12). The gravy was nice and the clams were sweet. But there were not many of them. Whatever clams we found, together with the gravy tasted good with the porridge.

Overall, we thought that Gu Zao Ren Taiwan Porridge is a nice place to have a simple meal if you are in the Eastern part of Singapore. However, we would probably stick to the classic dishes and avoid the pricier dishes on future visits.
