So Good Char Chan Tang at i12 Katong

The popular Hong Kong style casual dining café, So Good Char Chan Tang, has opened an outlet in i12 Katong Mall.

So Good at i12 Katong

One of the most popular stores in i12 Katong is the So Good Bakery on the ground floor of the mall. The staff of So Good Bakery had the patience of Singaporeans standing in a queue for Hello Kitty. They had to respond with a smile to the countless times they have been asked “how come no char chan tang?”, and more lately “when is the char chan tang opening?” and “where is your cafe?”.

The So Good Char Chan Tang at i12 Katong finally opened in November 2022 and it is located on Level 4. The cafe has a bank of self-ordering kiosks next to its entrance. The rather narrow doorway will lead into a spacious dining hall to the rear with a good view of the charming neighbourhood. There is even a private dining room.

So Good Char Chan Tang’s Menu is extensive. Wok Fried Rice and Noodles, Pastas, Roasted Meats, Dim Sum and Sandwiches are on the menu.

There are affordably priced sets at various times of the day – including Oriental Breakfast Set, Western Breakfast set and Afternoon Tea Set.

Afternoon Tea at So Good Char Chan Tang i12

We visited So Good Char Chan Tang i12 Katong in the afternoon and ordered a Polo Bun Set ($4) and a French Toast Set ($5). GST would be added to the bill but there was no service charge, as it was a self-service cafe.

The Polo Bun was really “so good”. It had the signature cracked sugary crust on top and the bread was fluffy. The slab of butter in between made it a decadent treat.

The plating at So Good was nothing to talk about. The presentation of the French Toast on a big white plate was as basic as it could get. There was a slab of butter on top of the bread with maple syrup on the side. The thick slice of bread had been deep fried to a golden brown colour. As expected, the outside was slightly crispy with the visible brown edges of fried eggs adding to the texture. The inside of the bread was soft and fluffy. It was delicious.
