Ajumma’s Korean Restaurant at PLQ Mall

The newly opened Ajumma’s at PLQ Mall is the latest outlet of the popular casual dining Korean restaurant chain. Besides Ajumma’s at PLQ Mall, there are outlets in Funan Mall, Bukit Panjang Plaza and Waterway Point. It is not unusual to see people standing in line patiently to get a seat at one of the Ajumma’s Korean restaurants.

Ajumma’s at PLQ Mall

The Ajumma’s outlet at Paya Lebar Quarter (PLQ) is located on Basement 2 of PLQ Mall, at the end near the entrance to the MRT Station.

The casual dining restaurant is small but the interior designer had been creative in combining benches and bar counter seats to maximize seating in the compact space. ASmall tables are used to allow for a flexible seating plan which can accommodate dining groups of different sizes.

The interior decorations and furniture at Ajumma’s are basic. However, bold and bright colors and lighting help to create a lively and energetic atmosphere that feel vibrant and trendy.

The Menu of Ajumma’s at PLQ Mall

Ajumma’s at PLQ Mall offers a wide range of Korean dishes. The staple grilled meat and fish, pancakes and ramyeon are on the menu. Those looking for bibimbap, jjajanmyeon, toppoki, army’s stew and kimchi pancake will not be disappointed. There are also interesting desserts and beverages. Hite beer, soju and makkoli are available to make sure patrons can have the complete typical Korean dining experience.

Currently, Ajumma’s at PLQ Mall has a teatime promotion. Between 3 pm and 5 pm on a weekday, a Ramyeon meal with side dishes and a drink is priced at only $9.90.

Even without special promotions, the prices at Ajumma’s are very reasonable. We ordered the Pork Bulgogi ($14.80) which came with rice, 4 side dishes and hot tea; and Crispy Samgyeopsal ($14.90), which also came with a tray of 4 sides dishes (which we understand to be refillable).

Pork Bulgogi

The Pork Bulgogi with rice is a classic Korean dish with marinated grilled pork. Ajumma’s was quite generous with the portion size. The pork had a tender texture and was flavourful. It was a straightforward dish that was tasty and filling.

Crispy Samgyeopsal

The crispy samgyeopsal with creamy scrambled eggs and soy-yuzu sauce was a more unusual dish. It was a bowl of rice topped with eggs, seaweed and pork slices. The crackling pork belly was like good char siew with the added bonus of a tangy soy-yuzu sauce. All the elements combined well for a delightful dish.

Good Food Good Price

Ajumma’s is popular with a young fanbase. It is easy to understand why. The casual Korean eatery is unpretentious but effortlessly cool. Service is friendly and efficient. Most importantly, it serves a wide variety of good Korean dishes at wallet-friendly prices.
