Comida Mexicana – Colourful Mexican Restaurant at East Coast Road

Comida Mexicana may not be a place that immediately comes to mind when deciding where to go for a quiet weekday lunch. The colourful Mexican restaurant along East Coast Road looks more suitable for a lively dinner party or for happy hour drinks. But we were quite happy to have the restaurant all to ourselves and have a lunch of Mexican cuisine.

Loud Walls, Quiet Ambience

The decor at Comida Mexicana is certainly loud – vibrant colours and bold paintings. But the atmosphere was peaceful on a weekday afternoon in Singapore. It is located in a shophouse along East Coast Road (junction with Telok Kurau Road), a short walk up the road from the very famous Beach Road Prawn Noodles.

With no one else dining here, we could wander around and take these photos. It is really an attractive Mexican restaurant. The character of the place can be summed up in the cheeky neon sign: Soup of the day: Tequila!

Our Mexican Food Lunch

Tortilla chips with dips go best with a cold beer during happy hour. But they are also welcome as a snack to start a quiet lunch. This was an elaborate bowl of dip with lots of vegetable toppings.

A more substantial starter, quesadillas soon arrived. Tortilla turnover eaten with cheeses, vegetables and jalapenos. This is an easy dish to be shared by a few diners.

The chicken enchilada was packed meat and sauces and beautifully presented. This will be a dish I will get if eating by myself.

The star attraction of lunch was beef fajitas ($36). With an aroma that arrived at the table before the dish, the steaming hot grilled meat with sautéed onions was eaten with warm tortillas. Guacamole, sour cream, shredded jack cheese and red salsa are provided, to be selected and added according to individual’s preference. It reminded me of Peking duck. This was the highlight and final dish of our lunch at Comida Mexicana Singapore.
