Merci Marcel East Coast is a new outlet of the French cafe chain that wowed us with not only the food but also its interior design. Taking up quite a large space along East Coast Road near the junction with Tembeling Road, this cafe has different zones with unique vibes.
Beautiful Interior of Merci Marcel East Coast
Let’s talk about the decor first, before we deal with the food. Wooden panels, rattan furniture and floppy lamp shades give the main dining area a resort feel. The adequate air-conditioning provision made the place cool enough even in the face of the current heat wave in Singapore.
Two areas near the entrance are dressed up like small living rooms. Cosy and warm, these will be a nice look we would copy if decorating a small apartment.
This bold room design reminded us of another cafe that is memorable for its decor – Cafe Utu at Keong Saik. These comfy zones will be perfect for coffee and dessert at Merci Marcel East Coast.
Happy Hour Area
High chairs and narrow tables give this area a pub like feel. Other than the patriotic poster, this is not our favourite area.
Outdoor Seating Suitable For A Balcony
Those who prefer natural ventilation can opt for the outdoor seats and tables on the five-foot way facing East Coast Road. A bit warm, but good for watching the world go by.
Merci Marcel East Coast Menu
Here are pictures of the Merci Marcel East Coast menu for lunch and wine list. The food items in the menu look like predictable listing in a typical hip cafe brunch and lunch menu. But how the dishes were executed turned out not quite typical.
What We Ate For Lunch at East Coast Road
We managed to get the nice table we referred to earlier. It was more of a coffee table and was less comfortable for eating real food. But the prettiness was worth the discomfort. We tried the baramundi fillet ($28) and beef burger ($29). Both dishes were presented very beautifully. The plate design looked like a Sarreguemines plate design which is quite appropriate for a French cafe.
The burger was served open-faced, which is a good idea as it makes cutting with a knife easier. Together with parmesan cheese, crispy Bayonne ham, homemade fries and onion chutney, the beefy homemade patty combined to make a very good burger indeed.
Diners who are less hungry will like the grilled fish dish. The piece of fish was petite but well cooked with a crisp skin. The accompanying ingredients – slow cooked bell peppers and onions spiced with cumin, fresh coriander were better than that served with grilled barramundi in a typical cafe. Another restaurant we can think of that created such a burst of flavours in a grilled fish dish was the new COMO Cuisine Orchard Cafe at COMO Metropolitan Singapore.
Our lunch at this lovely French cafe along East Coast Road ended with coffee and a chocolate croissant. Very typical items but they did it better than average.
