Bites by Ann Chin is a small cafe in Sim Lim Square that offers a comfortable spot to enjoy popiah. This eatery also has a delightful selection of local favourites, great for a light meal or a satisfying tea break.
Ann Chin Popiah
Ann Chin Popiah was founded in 1958 by a Mr Lim Kam Chwee as a pushcart stall which he named “Ann Chin” (or 安珍 in Chinese). Today Ann Chin Popiah have many outlets all over Singapore and takes online orders. Its Chinatown Complex popiah stall, where popiah skins are still made by hand on the premises, is listed in Singapore’s Michelin Guide.
Bites by Ann Chin @ Sim Lim Square
Located on Level 2 of Sim Lim Square, Bites by Ann Chin provides a comfortable yet simple space for a quick bite. The brightly lit interior, featuring the brand’s signature orange and white colours, offers seating for around 20 diners. While not a place for a leisurely extended meal, it’s perfect for a satisfying snack or tea break.
Menu of Local Delights
The menu of Bites by Ann Chin of course features their signature popiah and kueh pie tee. But their menu extends beyond these traditional offerings. Fried spring rolls, yam cake, Katong laksa and even waffles with various fillings cater to a wider range of palates. Interesting items like chicken cutlet popiah and kaya waffle are also available. Whether you are in the mood for something savoury or sweet, you should be able to find some yummy light bites on the menu.
You can also order DIY party sets or just popiah skins from them for a popiah party at home.
Delightful Snacks
We opted for the classics: popiah ($2.50 per roll), kueh pie tee ($3.70 for 4 pieces) and chee cheong fun ($2.20). The popiah lived up to its reputation, boasting a thin and light skin that held its form without becoming soggy. The filling, a delightful mix of turnips, lettuce, bean sprouts, hard-boiled eggs, and many other ingredients, offered a great balance of flavours and textures.
The kueh pie tee were equally impressive. These bite-sized delights featured crispy pastry shells filled with a delicious blend of chopped prawns, shredded vegetables and garnishes.
While the chee cheong fun was a more standard offering, it was nonetheless simple and tasty. The coffee ($2.50), brewed in a Nescafe machine, provided a familiar and comforting finish.
A Bite-Sized Gem
With its convenient location and focus on fresh, good quality ingredients, Bites by Ann Chin deserves a spot on your “Where to Eat Popiah” list in Singapore. So, next time you are browsing for IT accessories in Sim Lim Square and need a pit stop for snacks, you may want to treat yourself to a taste of delectable popiah at Bites by Ann Chin. It is also comfortable place for both affordable quick meals and satisfying snack breaks.
