Sin Ming Rd Chicken Rice (新明路鸡饭) used to be at Sin Ming Road, but the restaurant is now at Bishan Street 11. It is a popular chicken rice shop with a strong following. Good chicken rice is not hard to find in Singapore and consumers can be rather demanding of this local favourite food. We were impressed by its Google review score of 4.5 stars (with 415 reviews) and so made a trip down to Bishan to try some Sin Ming chicken rice.
Bishan Chicken Rice
The chicken rice shop occupies its own shop space which makes it very accessible to its customers. There are some indoor dining tables with air-conditioning. But we found this area to be noisy and hectic (in the form of customers ordering at the counter and service staff preparing and delivering food).
Unless the heat gets unbearable, I think the better tables are the ones outside. There are more tables to choose from and less human activities.
Sin Ming Rd Chicken Rice (and tze char restaurant)
Here are pictures of the Sin Ming Road Chicken Rice restaurant menu. You will notice that the chicken rice and related dishes formed only a portion of the menu. The rest of the menu is populated by dishes commonly found in tze char restaurants in Singapore – such as sweet and sour pork, prawn paste chicken wings, fried vegetables and mee goreng. It is perhaps more accurate to describe this as a tze char restaurant that is famous for its chicken rice.
Sin Ming Chicken Rice Lunch
We ordered half a roast chicken, chicken rice and a jade tofu dish ($15).
Based on the Google review score, we had high expectations of the Sin Ming Road chicken rice. We thought that the chicken was good but not outstanding. The meat had a good texture but we found it a tad too salty. No complaints however about the rice which was nicely dry and fragrant.
The Winning Dish
We were however pleasantly surprised by the tofu dish which was served in a generous portion. The pieces of tofu were delicious and accompanied by lots of vegetables and mushroom. The combination of just two dishes – chicken and tofu would be enough for four persons whether for lunch or dinner. Seems like good value to us.
