Social Place Singapore at The Forum Shopping Mall is the first overseas outlet of Hong Kong restaurant Social Place. Its bright coloured interior may not look like a typical Chinese restaurant but its walls lined with mahjong tiles make this a suitable place to bring your mahjong kakis for lunch.

Modern Chinese Restaurant at The Forum Shopping Mall

We liked the fresh and lively restaurant decor the moment we stepped into the restaurant. Even better were the inner parts of the space which had mahjong tiles as wall tiles. Very creative indeed. The last time we saw a Singapore restaurant decor using MJ tiles was Mui Kee Congee at its original location on the ground floor of Shaw Centre.

Social Place Singapore Menu
Here are pictures of some pages of the Social Place Singapore menu. It is quite an eclectic menu with a mix of familiar Chinese restaurant dishes (such as sweet and sour pork) as well as dishes that we have not seen before (such as foie gras in Chinese wine).

Interesting Chinese Restaurant Food In Singapore
We started with a very conservative choice – bamboo pith and vegetable soup ($16.80). This was a light milky soup. It was a pleasant soup to start a meal.

Our next dish – Sweet & Sour Pork on Ice ($28.80) was a more unusual dish. Cubes of sweet and sour pork, intermingled with tomatoes were served on a bed of ice. We would have been happy to eat the pork warm as they were nicely cooked and flavoured. The cooling by the ice gave this classic Chinese dish a different dimension.

We think that quails are less often served at Singapore Chinese restaurants than in Hong Kong. The Social Place Signature roasted quail ($18.80 for one quail) was a dish we had to try. This was probably the best dish of the day. The seasoning was good and the skin was crisp. It would have been better if the meat was less dry.

For dessert, there was one item that stood out – the mahjong jelly. Mahjong players will surely like this dessert and may jostle to get the “發”tile. In terms of taste these were no different from normal agar agar. But making them look like mahjong tiles increased their entertainment value substantially.
