Lunch at New Italian Restaurant Sophia St. Regis Singapore

Sophia St. Regis Singapore opened recently. The new Italian restaurant takes over the space previously occupied by French restaurant Brasserie Les Saveurs. We have had generally good experiences when we visited Les Saveurs over the years and looked forward to our lunch at the new Sophia restaurant.

New Italian Restaurant at St Regis Singapore

The new dark wood entrance with fluted glass panels certainly gave the new restaurant a classy sophisticated look. Once we were inside, it was clear that the decor had been spruced up. Surfaces seemed more glossy. We spotted new chandeliers and the table and seating layout had changed. But the bones of the restaurant – the high ceiling and large windows remained largely intact.

We were glad that the small dining nooks that are carved into one side of the restaurant had been retained. These spaces are elevated and enjoy quite a bit of privacy away from the rest of the dining tables. We were fortunate to get a table here on this visit (as well as previous visits in 2016 and 2022). The only downside is that unless your server is actively checking on you (as was the case in past visits) it can be a challenge to get the attention of the staff (which was the case on this visit).

A fair selection of Italian and international wines are served at the restaurant. These are sample pages from the Sophia St. Regis wine list.

A Simple Italian Lunch

Lunch started predictably with some bread and olive oil. The rest of the food followed soon after. It seems that the kitchen at the new Sohia restaurant is super efficient. All our dishes arrived very quickly at about the same time. We should stagger our ordering on future visits.

Grilled Octopus

The grilled octopus ($32), served with fava beans, red onion, mint and semi-dried tomato, was perfectly cooked with some nicely charred surfaces. The insides were soft and moist. Seasoning was good. We wished that it was larger but other than that this was a very good octopus dish.

Paccheri pomodoro e ricotta

Next was a beautiful pasta dish – paccheri pomodoro e ricotta. According to Wikipedia, paccheri is a type of pasta in the shape of a very large tube, originating from the Campania region of Italy. In our case, the pasta was in the shape of domes. They looked very cute. Together with a light tomato sauce (pomodoro) and ricotta cheese. This was an enjoyable dish. Like the octopus, it was served in a small portion.

Margherita Pizza

We were glad to see the margherita pizza ($22) when it arrived. Not only did it look beautiful, it was in a size that we were expecting. With a very nicely browned crust, the insides of the pizza were soft and of the right texture for us. This was a very good pizza which made us want to do a return visit to Sophia St. Regis Singapore in the near future.
