Hjh Maimunah Mini has opened at SingPost Centre’s basement, bringing affordable heritage Malay and Indonesian cuisine to Paya Lebar.

From Shophouse to Chain

The new outlet joins a growing chain that began in the 1990s. Founder Mdm Mahiran Abdul Rahman started the business at 27 from a Jalan Pisang shophouse. She used recipes handed down by her late mother, after whom the restaurant is named. Hjh Maimunah (pronounced ‘Hajah Maimunah’) became a heritage icon in Kampong Glam. The original Jalan Pisang location remains popular, alongside the Joo Chiat branch. Both established outlets continue to draw crowds.
The business now spans multiple F&B outlets, frozen food manufacturing and catering services. There are Hjh Maimunah Mini outlets in many locations, including City Square Mall, Clementi Mall, Hong Leong Building, Parkway Parade and Vivo City.
What to Expect at Hjh Maimunah Mini

The Hjh Maimunah Mini at SingPost Centre has a compact space. Despite limited space, they have fitted tables for approximately 40 diners. Two-seater and four-seater tables are the norm. Some tables can be joined to accommodate up to eight persons. The setup suits quick meals rather than leisurely dining. It is probably not suitable for large groups.

There seems to a a queue at the popular restaurant all the time. However, don’t let the long queues discourage you. The self-service system partly explains the queues. Customers queue to select dishes from display counters, pay at the cashier, then carry everything to their tables themselves.
Both dine-in and takeaway customers use the same queue. Many opt for takeaway orders, which contributes to queue length. Yet the line moves relatively quickly thanks to efficient operations. Multiple staff members attend to customers simultaneously while dedicated personnel handle beverages and cashier duties.
Extensive Selection Despite Size

The “Mini” label doesn’t limit variety. Many dishes fill the display counter. Menu boards clearly show pricing, helping customers decide before reaching the front. Though, there will always be people who spent all their time standing in line doing everything except deciding what they want to eat. When they reach the front of the queue they will take a long time deciding what they want and, often, change their minds a few times.

Besides nasi padang, Hjh Maimunah Mini at SingPost Centre also offers ambeng platter as well as items like Lontong and Tahu Telur. Kuihs are also available for desserts or as snacks during tea breaks.

Pricing That Won’t Break the Bank
Set meals offer particularly good value. The Meatless Set costs $5.50, while the Chicken Set and Beef Rendang Set are priced at $8 and $8.50 respectively. Each set includes one main item plus two side dishes. We like the sets. No surprises. No hidden costs or unexpected charges. These prices are lower than most food court nasi padang stalls.
Chicken Set and Beef Set
We had a Ayam Lemak Set ($8) and Beef Rendang Set ($8.50). Teh C Kosong was $1.50.

The ayam lemak was a generous piece of tender chicken cooked in a creamy coconut milk gravy. Turmeric gave the curry its golden colour, while lemongrass and ginger provided an inviting aroma. It was not very spicy. The curry went very well with rice. Our favourite side dishes, sayur lodeh and telur belado, were as delicious as expected.

Hjh Maimunah’s Beef Rendang is one of their signature dishes, featuring slow-cooked beef in a rich, dry curry made with an aromatic spice blend known as rempah and coconut milk. As expected, the beef rendang was tender and had well-balanced flavours. Paired with ikan bilis kacang and stir-fried spinach, it made for a complete meal with interesting contrasts in both texture and taste. Very satisfying and enjoyable. Portion size was quite generous.

Verdict

Hjh Maimunah Mini at SingPost Centre brings quality nasi padang to Paya Lebar at prices that encourage regular visits. For quick, satisfying nasi padang meals, this outlet delivers. Long queues reflect its popularity rather than any inefficiency, and patient patrons will find the wait worthwhile.
