Le Clos Wine House & Restaurant : Romantic Dinner at New Bahru

Le Clos Wine House & Restaurant is a wine shop and restaurant at New Bahru. It has the conditions for a romantic dinner: soft lighting, French comfort food on the menu and lots of bottles of wine to choose from.

Deli and Retail Store

Immediately after entering Le Clos is a retail area selling wine glasses, drinks and a deli counter selling nice stuff like chocolates and cheeses.

Wine Cellar at New Bahru

Wandering deeper into the premises we entered the most interesting part of the Le Clos Wine House & Restaurant establishment at New Bahru – the wine cellar. It is much larger than it looks from outside. The L-shaped space had floor to ceiling shelves stocked full of wines.

Les Clos Wine & Corkage Fee

The wines seem to be mostly French with a large representation from the Bordeaux and Burgundy wine regions. DRC and other grand crus together with more affordable ones can be picked up from the shelves. Wine prices are written prominently on the bottles. The wine bottles from the Les Clos cellar can be purchased and consumed in the restaurant. A corkage fee of $40 per bottle is charged in this situation. The same practice applies in Culina in Dempsey which also has a vast wine retail section where bottles can be bought and consumed in the Culina bistro (with a $18 corkage fee).

Romantic Restaurant at New Bahru

There are many dining options at New Bahru. They range from fine dining restaurant Somma to casual restaurants such as atas nasi lemak place Coconut Club, Mexican restaurant Huevos and One Prawn & Co . Le Clos Wine House & Restaurant sits somewhere in between. With main courses averaging about $40++ each, it is possible to have a nice dinner without breaking the wallet. It all depends on the choice of wine (where the sky is the limit).

The decor of the new Les Clos restaurant at New Bahru bears some resemblance to their former location at Bukit Pasoh. They were known as Clos Pasoh at that time. Lots of lush leafy tropical plants provide decoration and adds to the smart casual atmosphere. The sound treatment panels also did not go unnoticed. They were probably the reason the sound levels were kept under control even though it was a full house (even though it was a weekday). With soft lighting and the clever use of small table lamps, the restaurant sparkles at night.

Le Clos Restaurant Wine List

A long list of wines is available as well. We are told that the list reflects the inventory held in the wine cellar. The prices on the menu are the same prices as indicated in the cellar but with an additional $40, representing the corkage fee. The small print can be hard to read at the dimly lit dining table. It is easier and more fun to select the wines physically at the cellar.

Appetisers

We had a few appetisers, the best of which were the grilled garlic tiger prawns ($18 for 2 pieces, picture above) and padrรณn peppers & Japanese seaweed ($15, picture below).

The other starters that we tried were ร‰poisse and truffles croquettes ($15), fennel & burrata salad ($28) and lamb tenderloin skewers ($19).

Dinner at Le Clos Wine House & Restaurant: Main Courses

The main courses arrived at the same time. They worked well with the table setting to create a beautiful picture.

All the main courses were good. The best ones being the grass-fed Angus striploin (250gr) with fries & Bordelaise sauce ($39) picture above – note the flavourful crust on the meat) and the Atlantic cod loin with leeks, rice and saffron beurre blanc ($39).

The other mains were Iberico pork with broccolini and mashed potatoes ($36) and truffles and morels mushroom risotto ($32). They all added up to be a lot of food, leaving no place for dessert.
