Seoryung Lotte World Mall (서령): Pyongyang style noodles and mandu

Seoryung Lotte World Mall (서령) is one of the traditional Korean restaurants located at Seoul Seoul 3080, a food and beverage zone in the Lotte World Mall in Seoul. It is a convenient place for traditional Korean noodles and dumplings in a modern shopping mall.

Lotte World Mall (롯데월드몰) is a shopping complex in the Songpa District of Seoul, South Korea. Opened in 2014, it includes the Lotte World Tower, the Lotte World Mall building and other complexes like the Avenue L building. The Lotte World Tower (tall building in picture below) houses the Signiel Hotel and its restaurants such as Stay and Bicena. Next to it is the Lotte World Mall building which is a huge shopping mall.

“Seoul Seoul 3080” is a retro-themed dining and shopping zone located inside the Lotte World Mall. According to the Lotte Property and Development website, the dining area on the 5th and 6th floors is said to recreate “the atmosphere of Seoul streets from the 1930s to the 1980s, featuring nostalgic cafes, exotic restaurants, and vintage-style aesthetics alongside modern amenities“. This is a picture of the floor plan of the 6th floor where Seoryung Lotteworld Mall (#7 on the map) is located.

Locating the restaurant on the 6th floor of Lotte World Mall took some time. As the shop units are not numbered, we found this shop floor plan to be useful. The main branch of the restaurant apparently has a history of about 25 years. It is a popular restaurant and so it is best to arrive very early or very late. We chose the latter (around 8pm).

The restaurant has a decor that combines tradition with modern touches such as the lighting and the ordering system via iPad.

서령 Seoryung Menu

Seoryung Lotte World Mall is quite limited with the highlight being Pyongyang cold noodles made the traditional way with pure buckwheat noodles. Here are some sample pages from the online menu.

A few other dumpling and side dishes complete the menu.

Complimentary items such as sauces and topping up of kimchi can also be ordered via the iPad. This was a very useful and productive feature.

Noodles and Mandu at Lotte World Mall

We ordered our two favourite traditional Korean dish – noodles and mandu. This brought to mind our nice experience at Seoul Michelin Guide kalguksu and mandu restaurant Hwangsaengga Kalguksu 황생가칼국수 on a prior visit to Seoul.

The mandu (KRW12,000 approx S$11, for 6 pieces) were big and juicy. Nicely seasoned and with fresh tasting pork, these were as good as the “Michelin approved” ones at Hwangsaengga Kalguksu.

This was our first time trying perilla oil buckweed noodles or sunmyeon (순면). The noodles (KRW17,000) were very good – with the right amount of bounce and a mildly nutty taste. But what stood out even more was the perilla oil aroma and flavours. It was fragrant like sesame seed oil but the nuttiness was more rounded and less intense. The taste was further enhanced by the seaweed topping. This was a simple but very satisfying dish. It is also a dish that will bring us back to Seoryung Lotte World Mall on a next visit to Seoul.
