Dumpling Darlings New Bahru : Flagship at Factory Block

Dumpling Darlings New Bahru is the new flagship store of this cute restaurant that specialises in dumplings. This is their third outlet in Singapore, the other two are located in Amoy Street and Circular Road.

Dumpling Darlings Opens at New Bahru Factory Block

Exciting things are happening at New Bahru’s Factory Block. New restaurants and retail stores have opened on levels one and two. This is the building right at the front of the trendy shopping complex. We had hitherto not paid too much attention to this part of New Bahru as it did not have any food places (it only had education and developmental businesses on levels 3 and 4).

Things have changed and popular restaurants and shops such as Sushiro and Beams have opened up. We will show you more pictures of them in a subsequent post. For now, we focus your attention on our lunch at Dumpling Darlings New Bahru on level one of the Factory Block.

Wood panelling and furniture give the restaurant a warm welcoming look. The restaurant has seating that faces two sides. We took a table on the side that opens into the inside of the building (picture below). The other row of seating looks outwards.

They did not let us forget that we were in a dumplings restaurant. There are dumpling-shaped characters on the wall and on the menu. There was even a giant dumpling hanging over our heads (picture below).

Ordering was done by scanning a QR which also took us to the online menu. But the physical menu is usually better, especially in this case as there are cute artwork with dumplings as the theme.

The main items to eat at Dumpling Darlings are dumplings and noodles. Small plates such as agedashi tofu and nasi ulam provide more variety. This being our first visit to a DD restaurant, we stuck to the main events and ordered a dumpling platter of 15 ($28++) and a miso mushroom noodles ($11+) with added jajang pork ($3++).

The presentation was attractive but once it was mixed up, its substance over form was put to the test. I am glad to say it passed the test with flying colours. The noodles were springy and well coated with the gravy. There was a generous amount of mushrooms which was the predominant taste. It was not necessary to add the jajang pork at all as the overall flavours were more than adequate.

Since we were new to Dumpling Darlings, the platter of 5 types of dumplings made our life easier. Three of each – original, veggie, crab & prawn (they are arranged left to right in the back row of this group photo), pierogi and duck (foreground).

This was the original dumplings (picture below). They were very similar to Japanese gyoza, such as those we tried at the Azabudai Hills Market. Served with vinegar, this was very enjoyable. The other types of dumplings had their respective sauces at the bottom of their bowls.

The other two dumplings we found to be distinctive were the pierogi (picture above) and the crab and prawn dumplings (picture below). We had to consult the internet to learn what was a pierogi. According to Wikipedia, it is a type of Polish dumpling. They tasted more like samosas than dumplings but the taste was quite nice nonetheless and provided a break from the sameness of the other dumplings. Basically, we found the veggie and duck to be similar to the original dumpling.

Best dumpling of the day was the crab and prawn which has pleasant seafood flavours enhanced by a touch of spiciness (of the curry kind).

You can guess our level of satisfaction from the cleaned up plates. In addition to the food quality, the service was friendly and efficient. Water was served without any charge as well.
