The “about us” page in the website of Bonjour Ma Cuisine has a simple description: breakfast and lunch à la Française. Its elder sister restaurant Ma Cuisine which is next door only opens for dinner. This looks like an efficient way of serving all day French cuisine from 9am to night.

Bonjour!
Ma Cuisine is a one Michelin star restaurant in the Singapore Michelin Guide. It is also known for its vast wine collection. We had a quick look at its web site which also lists wines for retail. There are indeed lots to choose from. We have not been to this Michelin Star French restaurant yet, but we recently had brunch at its more casual neighbour, Bonjour Ma Cuisine.

The restaurant has a warm cosy atmosphere. Lots of wine bottles (some empty) line the walls and shelves. For French wine aficionados, we suspect the wine list is as much of the attraction as the food. The Ma Cuisine wine list is also available at Bonjour.

Menu at Bonjour Ma Cuisine

The menu was a single sheet of paper which I always think is a good idea at casual restaurants as it is light and easy to place. More importantly, every one can study the food choices at the same time. We had a mixed selection from different parts of the menu.

French Food Brunch at Tanjong Pagar
Brunch started with some bread and coffee. The plain croissant ($6) and chocolate croissant (pain au chocolat, $8) were light and crisp. It was a pleasant start to the meal.

Egg and Meurette
Next to arrive was meurette ($24.80), which we ordered without really knowing what it was other than the description on the menu : “Poached Egg, red Wine Sauce, Bacon, Mushroom and Croutons”. The dish was exactly as described: an egg with some pieces of bacon with a high fat proportion. It was quite a small dish and reminded us of our local lor bak dish (braised pork belly with egg).

Fish quenelle in crustacean sauce ($21.80) was another dish that we had not tried before. According to an internet search, it is a light French dumpling made from pureed white fish, butter, and cream and gently poached. We thought the taste and texture was light and pleasant, like a hybrid between fish cake and tofu. The star of this dish was the crustacean sauce which was like a robust lobster bisque.

Fish and Chicken

The next two dishes were more familiar to us – oven-roasted fish fillet with Mediterranean sauce ($32.80) and French spring roast chicken ($24). The fish was ok and the chicken was very good. Even though it was a simple dish – the natural flavour of the chicken was enough to make this the best dish of the day.

Brunch at Bonjour Ma Cuisine – Dessert
Finally, we ended the meal with some caramel custard for dessert ($10).
