Ah Lock & Co is a newly opened eatery in Tanjong Pagar Centre offering Hakka Tofu Rice Bowl & Min Jiang Kueh. The tagline “Eat My Tofu” is on one of its walls as well as on the t-shirts of the staff – witty or inappropriate? Having actually eaten Ah Lock’s Hakka tofu, which was not bad, we would prefer to eat the stall’s min jiang kueh.
Stärker Signature, Tanjong Pagar Centre is the latest outlet of the Starker Group. They seem to be sprouting outlets all over Singapore. As of today they have three Starker Bistro outlets, two Starker Signature and one each of Starker Music and Starker Q. It seems that the “Bistro” series have more food choices with “German signature roasts as well as popular international dishes” while the Q series at the other end “is a multi-concept bar that serves a variety of cuisines with a local touch at wallet-friendly prices“. The “Signature” outlet at Starker Tanjong Pagar is therefore something in the upper middle segment. What is common through the range is the fresh and fruity beer that Starker is known for.
The IndoChili Tanjong Pagar restaurant is a traditional restaurant serving “Halal Authentic Indonesian Cuisines”. The restaurant is located in the basement of Tanjong Pagar Center and has easy access to the MRT station that has exits that lead into the building. We stopped by to try a couple of food items.
The Lobby Bar 1864 Sofitel Singapore is named after the year 1864 when the Tanjong Pagar Dock Company was founded. This gesture commemorates the start of the transformation of the neighbouring district from the fishing village to the city downtown that it is today. The 1864 Bar is a lovely place. It felt like the sort of living room that we like but never had. In the age of the sharing economy, we could “own” it for a while for the price of a few drinks. We made a detour to the 1864 Bar before our lunch at the Racines restauant next to it.
Famous ramen restaurant Ippudo opened their first restaurant in Mandarin Gallery, Singapore in 2009. Although we have not seen the long queues like those that formed in the early days, there seems to be firm support for their style of ramen after all these few years. We were at Ippudo Tanjong Pagar Centre on a weekend and were surprised to see a constant stream of ramen diners in this part of town which is generally quiet without the CBD office crowd.
