Diamond Kitchen, Laguna Park

Diamond Kitchen is a Chinese restaurant inside Laguna Park at Marine Parade Road, which serves Cantonese and Teochew food at reasonable prices. The location is a little unusual as it is within the compound of an old condominium. We thought we had stumbled upon a little known secret but apparently the restaurant already had quite a big following. We were told that a reservation would be highly recommended, especially during weekends.

One of its attractions is that there are ample surface parking lots very near to the restaurant (parking to eat in Katong/East Coast being a perennial problem) and the parking fee is only $1 per entry.

The restaurant is not dressed to impress and fittings and furnishing are unpretentious and functional. They mostly have big tables that can sit 10; and it would appear that even their smallest tables are meant for 5 or 6.

The menu is extensive and has the usual sections – Soup, Chicken, Pork, Vegetables, Seafood, Rice/Noodle and Specialties. We decided to pick from their signature dishes in the Specialties Menu and ordered the Superior Stock Clam Beehoon, Pumpkin Bean Curd and Champagne Pork Ribs. Each dish was priced at $12, $18 and $24 for small, medium and large portions respectively.

The beehoon was well braised and simmered in a delicious robust stock, topped with a very substantial serving of clams (lala). It felt like a lala dish with some beehoon. The stock was flavourful, with natural sweetness, without being overwhelming. It is a simple dish but a delectable one. They have a variation – the Superior Stock Crab Beehoon – which would be a good enough reason for us to return to the restaurant.

The deep fried bean curd in rich golden pumpkin sauce was topped with prawns, crab and scallops. It has a good combination of flavours and textures.

The Champagne Pork Ribs seemed to be a very popular dish. The pork ribs were deboned and the meat was tender and well-marinated.  The pork was sweetish with just a slight hint of wine (or champagne). It was an enjoyable dish, though we thought it might even be better if  the pork was a little crispier on the outside.

On the whole, it is easy to understand the popularity of Diamond Kitchen. It is a comfortable unpretentious place that serves good home-cooked style food at affordable prices…and did we mention parking at $1 per entry?
