Si Chuan Dou Hua, Szechuan restaurant Parkroyal Hotel Beach Road

Si Chuan Dou Hua Restaurant at PARKROYAL-1

Encouraged by the UOB Card promotion discount, we had lunch at Si Chuan Dou Hua Szechuan Restaurant Parkroyal Hotel, Beach Road recently. This Chinese restaurant at Parkroyal is located on the ground floor. A grand entrance welcomes diners into this traditionally furnished restaurant.

Immediately after the entrance was the Tian Fu Tea Room where the serious Chinese tea connoisseur can enjoy different types of high quality tea in a tea house setting.

The Si Chuan Dou Hua restaurant is furnished like a traditional Chinese restaurant with lots of wood panelling. However, the large private room was quite plainly furnished. Here are some pages from the dim sum, set meat and ala carte menus.  We selected an assortment of dim sum and regular dishes.

We were attracted by the pictures of the  pear-shaped potato fritters with minced meat ($5 for 3 pieces). The real thing looked not as nice as the pictures in the menu but it was still distinctive and good tasting.

Another unusual and beautiful dim sum dish was the pan-fried dumplings ($5). The dumplings themselves were no different from the typical pot stickers ( 鍋貼), but a thin crisp film that looks like a piece of coral made this a very beautiful dish, especially when viewed from below.

The fried carrot ($4.50) did not look different but the taste was above average. The xiao long pao on the other hand was quite ordinary.

We could not eat at a Szechuan restaurant without trying something hot and fiery right?  We asked for the heat to be toned down but this fried chicken dish ($24) still had enough peppers and chilli to fire up the throat. It is quite pleasant as long as one carefully dusts off the hot bits before eating any of the chicken pieces.

To cool things down, we had a more conventional spinach with fish skins ($20). This was a simple tasty dish. Both items were best eaten with the very smooth plain congee ($1.50 each).

Finally, some sweet items to neutralise any remaining heat in the mouth. With “dou hua” in the name of this Szechuan restaurant, we figured that the beancurd items had to be good. The beancurd with wolf berries ($4) was indeed delicate and smooth. A light and refreshing dessert.

The red bean pancake ($16) was not so light but was still enjoyable – not too oily or too sweet. Overall, a relaxed lunch at Si Chuan Dou Fu Szechuan restaurant Parkroyal Hotel with a mix of common and unusual items.

The restaurant charges $5 for pickles and $5 per person for Chinese tea. They serve coffees – regular and cappuccino here at $6 each but we think we will adjourn for coffee somewhere else the next time. Fortune cookies were served at the end. “We never stop learning” was one of the messages.
