The first McDonald’s restaurant was known as “McDonald’s Bar-B-Que”. Located in San Bernardino, California, it was set up by brothers Richard (Dick) and Maurice (Mac) McDonald in 1940. McDonald’s Bar-B-Que was (according to an article by Smithsonian Magazine) initially a roadside restaurant with “food delivered direct to the customer’s car via a fleet of attractive young women called carhops, so named because of their practice of jumping up on the auto’s running board to claim a patron as their own”. McDonald’s has come a long way since; and one of the major factors for its success is its ability to bring innovative products and services to meet the diverse and changing taste of its customers.
McDonald’s Singapore
We never got attractive carhops in the drive through restaurants of McDonald’s Singapore. However, since McDonald’s Singapore opened its first restaurant in October 1979 at Liat Towers, the popular fast food chain has introduced many new products and added much excitement to our lives. There were Happy Meals, Chicken McNuggets and McCafe; and who could forget the queues for Hello Kitty dolls and other collectible figurines.
Besides the classic menu items like the Big Mac, Cheeseburger, Filet-O-Fish and McChicken, McDonald’s Singapore has offered special burgers over the years. It has enticed us with localized versions of burgers like Satay Burger, Rendang Burger and, more recently, Nasi lemak Burger. We thought it would be interesting to document the burger offerings of McDonald’s Singapore. We scour our photo archives to compile this list of McDonald’s burgers we had tried in Singapore.
Ninja Chicken Burger
The new Ninja Chicken Burger has crispy chicken thigh glazed with sweet Nanban sauce, shredded white cabbage and Japanese tartar sauce. As it is the ninja burger the bun has to be black – so there is a charcoal sesame bun. It is quite tasty. We wonder if there will be a Ninja Turtle Burger.
Nasi Lemak Burger
There is no nasi (rice) in the “Nasi Lemak Burger” but the sambal sauce ensures that there is a real taste of nasi lemak.
Salted Egg Yolk Burger
Salted Egg Yolk Chicken Burger – salty-sweet grainy concoction with breaded whole-muscle chicken patty, curry leaves and chopped lettuce on a black pepper and white sesame bun.
BBQ Beef Burger with Egg
BBQ Beef Burger with Egg, with beef patty on melted cheese, topped with a tender egg and finished with tangy BBQ sauce, is a simple combination which is very delicious. Perhaps, the restaurant had seen us adding the BBQ sauce (for McNuggets) to our cheeseburgers over the years.
Chilli Lime Fish Burger
Chili Lime Fish Burger is the classic fillet-o-fish topped with romaine lettuce and spicy Kaffir Lime flavoured mayo. An interesting tangy spicy twist.
McRice Burger
With rice being a staple in Singapore, McDonald’s duly obliged with a burger sandwiched by rice cakes instead of bread. The unique version of McRice Burger we tried tasted almost like eating the zhi char dish of stir fried beef with capsicum.
Prosperity Beef Burger
The Prosperity Beef Burger was introduced for the Lunar New Year celebration. We were not sure how juicy beef, black pepper sauce and chopped onions could be linked to prosperity but the burger was delicious. There was also Prosperity Chicken Burger. You could also increase your dose of prosperity by having the Double Prosperity Burger.
Angry Bird Burger
McDonald’s restaurant introduced a range of Angry Birds offerings, including a burger with red buns, to co-incide with the release of The Angry Birds Movie.
The Super Red Burger was a burger with chicken patties, lettuce and a fried egg sandwiched between a red bun with spicy sauce. Read our post McDonald’s Angry Bird Super Red Burger.
McDonald’s Signature Collection
McDonald’s restaurants also introduced its Signature Collection featuring premium ingredients. The collection is refreshed from time to time. These are the Signature Collection burgers we have tried.
Buttermilk Crispy Chicken
The Signature Collection Buttermilk Crispy Chicken featured grilled pineapple rings, chicken thigh flavoured with buttermilk and creamy Colby cheese.
Classic Angus Cheese with 100% Angus beef
100% Angus beef patty, topped with chicken bacon strips, Colby cheese, tomato jalapeno relish and caramelised grilled onions.
Spicy Chicken with Apple Slaw
The McDonald’s Signature Collection Spicy Chicken with Apple Slaw featured chicken patty sandwiched between red apple slaw, wild rocket and white cheddar cheese.
There were of course many more McDonald’s specials over the years. We could not find photos of more McDonald’s burgers from our archives because we only acquired the snap before eating syndrome recently. McDonald’s Singapore will doubtless continue to introduce new menu offerings. We shall add to this list as we snap and eat new McDonald’s Singapore Special Burgers.
