Samy’s Curry Indian Restaurant at Dempsey is one of the most well known restaurants in Singapore. Founded by Mr M Veerasamy as a roadside stall in Tank Road, Samy’s Curry is now a 300 seat restaurant which is almost always packed.
Located in an old single storey building on the lush grounds of Dempsey Hill, Samy’s Curry Restaurant reminds you of bygone days with its simple decor, functional furniture and natural ventilation with the aid of ceiling fans. People don’t go to Samy’s Curry Restaurant for its ambience and it has no fancy food presentation for the Instagramers. Loyal customers go to Samy’s Curry Restaurant regularly simply because of the good affordable Indian food.
Choose Food from the Display Counter
To order, you can go to the food display counter and point out the dishes you like. The counter does not look big but there is a surprisingly wide range of food on display.
There are nann, Chettinad chicken, masala crab, tandoori prawns, Mysore mutton and more. You can ask for plain white rice or briyani rice.
Order from the Menu
You can also sit at your table and order from the menu. Below are pictures of a few pages of the menu of Samy’s Curry Indian Restaurant.
Banana Leaf Meal
The routine for a meal at Samy’s Curry starts with the banana leaf being placed on the table, together with the utensils for those not eating with their bare hands. Drinks and papadum will be served. A staff then comes round and scoop rice onto the banana leaf. Next, some vegetables and dhal will be added to your banana leaf.
We had ordered a variety of meat and vegetable dishes as well as the famed Samy’s fish head curry. Each dish tickled the taste buds with a wide range of flavours.
The standout dishes were the fish head curry, masala chicken and fish bergedil (fried fish and potato cutlet). The fish head curry came in a large pot. Prepared with curry powder, tomatoes, tamarind and other spices, it was spicy and tangy, with a hint of sweetness. The masala chicken, marinated with spices, was moist and tender and very delicious. The fish bergedil had nice texture and aroma.
Samy’s Curry Indian Restaurant at Dempsey is an unpretentious place for good affordable food. It might have become a tourists’ hot spot of sort but for an authentic banana leaf meal in Singapore, Samy’s Curry is still one of the best places to head to.
