Ban Leong Wah Hoe Zhi Char Restaurant in Upper Thomson

Ban Leong Wah Hoe Seafood Restaurant is a zhi char restaurant along Casuarina Road. This is a small road parallel to Upper Thomson Road just before the junction with Yio Chu Kang Road. There is a row of shops along Casuarina Road. You will see their backs along Upper Thomson Road if you are driving northwards from the city. The Pierce Reservoir is nearby. There are several restaurants along this stretch. Ban Leong Wah Hoe Zhi Char Restaurant is one of them. It occupies a large coffee shop style place at the end of the row.  We had lunch there recently.

We were at Ban Leong Wah Hoe at the tail end of their lunch service which is from 11 am to 2.30 pm. They reopen at 5 pm for the start of the dinner session. Halfway through our lunch, they started to close up for the afternoon break. It is best to time your visit so that you finish before 2.30 pm.

Ban Leong Wah Hoe Seafood Restaurant Menu

The Ban Leong Wah Hoe Seafood Restaurant Menu lists the usual zhi char restaurant items without prices.   We do not have pictures of it as it is not helpful. Basically, we ordered some zhi char classics, prompted by suggestions from our server.  We placed our orders not knowing the prices. But thankfully, prices were quite friendly when the bill eventually arrived.  We were pleasantly surprised to be served cold barley drinks on the house.

These were the dishes that we tried that day :  fried mee sua ($8), prawn paste chicken ($8), claypot bean curd ($8) and free drinks.

The prawn paste chicken (har cheong kai) was prepared with just winglets which made this a dish where eating with our hands was the most sensible way.  We thought that the prawn paste marinade was average in taste and the deep-frying was a bit overdone. The skin was dark and hard.

The bean curd claypot was a nice dish. Costing only $8, it could suffice as a meal for two persons to eat with steamed rice.

The fried noodles (mee sua) was recommended by the server. The noodles contained a lot of seafood ingredients but the taste was not exceptional.

This is a bird’s eye view of our lunch at Ban Leong Wah Hoe Zhi Char Restaurant in Upper Thomson.  Located out of the city, it has a laid back feel. Basically we think that it is a possible spot to go for a change of scenery. Service was fine when we first arrived but became inattentive as we got towards the closing time.
