Osaka Ohsho – Gyoza & Okowa in Raffles City

Osaka Ohsho is a Japanese restaurant that specializes in gyoza but its menu includes many favourite Japanese dishes as well as Chinese style Japanese dishes. Osaka Ohsho in Raffles City also offers Okowa, a Japanese steamed glutinous rice dish.

One of our favourite places for a simple meal is Yonehachi, which is located in the basement food hall of Takashimaya, Ngee Ann City. It specializes in Okowa(おこわ), a Japanese steamed glutinous rice a Japanese rice dish mixed with meat or vegetables and other ingredients such as sweet potato, chestnuts or Azuki beans (read about our visit to Yonehachi here). We are thus very happy to see that Osaka Ohsho in Raffles City offers okowa.

Yonehachi and Osaka Ohsho are both brands under Japan Food Holdings in Singapore. The franchised brands of the group include Ajisen Ramen, Akimitsu, Menya Musashi and Konjiki Hototogisu.

Osaka Ohsho in Raffles City is located in the basement food hall. The dining area is spacious with a fairly typical casual diner furnishing. It is similar to Osaka Ohsho in West Gate which we had dined in previously (read about our visit to Osaka Ohsho West Gate here.)

Menu of Osaka Ohsho

The menu of Osaka Ohsho is quite extensive. There are a la carte items as well as various set meals. Order is made via a digital tablet. Below are pictures of a few pages of the electronic menu.

Okowa & Gyozas at Osaka Ohsho

We ordered 2 set meals – the Okowa with 6 piece Gyoza Set ($11.90) and the Okowa with Ramen & Fried Chicken Set ($13.90). We could choose the flavours of the okowa and we opted for cha shu and scallops.

Okowa

Yonehachi - Okowa or Sticky Rice

The okowa came in small wooden boxes. The sticky rice steamed with the various ingredients had a nice texture. It was flavourful and delicious. The only negative point was that the ingredients were quite meagre.

Gyozas

Osaka Ohsho – ‘The King of Gyoza in Osaka

The gyozas of Osaka Ohsho lived up to expectations. The pan-fried dumplings had thin wanton skins that were crisp at the edges. The filling of minced pork with garlic and cabbage was delectable.

Chicken & Ramen

The fried chicken was quite good. Fried to a golden brown on the outside, the meat inside was moist and tender. The ramen, which came with a piece of cha shu and half an onsen egg, was average.

Affordable Dining Option

Overall, we had a good meal for a very reasonable price. Osaka Ohsho Raffles City is an affordable dining option right in the heart of town. The menu is quite extensive and we are glad that there is another convenient place where we can enjoy okowa. Osaka Ohsho has several other outlets in Singapore including in Junction 8, Nex, VivoCity, & Waterway Point.
