Kogane Yama Jem – Simple and nice Japanese restaurant in Jem, Jurong East

Faced with the wide range of food options near the Ng Teng Fong General Hospital, we settled for lunch at Kogane Yama, a simple and nice Japanese restaurant in Jem shopping mall. It is located on the ground floor and is easily accessible from the elevated walkway from the NTFGH and from Jurong East MRT station and Westgate next door.

The simple, almost zen-like decor of Kogane Yama Jem was one of our reasons for choosing to eat there. It was quiet when we were there on a weekday. We could choose to sit wherever we wanted. Basically the inner seats are great for privacy and quiet but the tables at the entrance are the most interesting as they are at a good vantage point to people watch.

The other main reason why we decided to eat at this simple Japanese restaurant in Jem, was the menu. The prices seemed affordable and the pictures were also clear and attractive. The question in our minds was – will the real thing look as beautiful as the photos?  We selected the mixed bowl tendon ($13.90) and the salmon teriyaki don ($11.90) as they looked were the most beautiful dishes on the menu.

We were glad that the real dishes turned out looking almost like the real thing. Diners can customise their tendon. Select the topping (mixed, prawn, chicken or vegetable), the base (rice, udon or soba) and the type of sauce. Our mixed tempura bowl (with rice and non spicy sauce) was lovely. It was stuffed with a mix of seafood and vegetable tempura items on top of rice.

For an extra $2.50, diners can add ona miso soup and chawanmushi. The taste of these items were ok, but not exceptional.

The salmon teriyaki don did look almost as good as the picture on the menu, but it was less attractive than the tendon.  Taste wise it was just as good.  The slice of grilled salmon was crisp on the sides. The Hanjuku egg  – softly cooked eggs with a slightly runny yolk and delicate egg white was the highlight.  We thought that it was a value for money item.

Kogane Yama would be on our minds if we are looking for a simple and nice Japanese restaurant in Jem, Jurong East.
