Kai Duck is a new restaurant that opened last week at Takashimaya Shopping Centre in Ngee Ann City Singapore. It is run by the folks behind Kai Garden in Marina Square (you can read about our visit here). No prizes for guessing what is on the menu at Kai Duck restaurant. It is duck season… and dim sum as well.
Unlike Kai Garden which is a formal Cantonese restaurant, Kai Duck has a more casual atmosphere. It is located on level 5, the same floor as Best Denki and Imperial Treasure Nan Bei Restaurant which is an immediate neighbour.
Kai Duck Menu
The Kai Duck restaurant menu is an impressive one. Hardcover, large and full of clear photos. Apart from duck there are many other types of Chinese food to choose from. Here are two sample pages from the menu and portions from the order forms that give you an idea of the food items and prices to expect. We ordered the Kai Duck signature Peking Duck and some dim sum dishes.
The three types of steamed dim sum ($6.80 each) that we tried were all good. The steamed prawn dumplings (har kow), xiao long bao and cheong fun with kurobuta pork were comparable to those from the usual Chinese Cantonese restaurants in town.
The Peking Duck
The Peking Duck ($68) was, of course, the highlight of our lunch at Kai Duck.
As usual the skin of the Peking duck was removed to be eaten with the pancakes, leek and cucumber strips. The extra ingredient at Kai Duck was the corn biscuits, which were also served at our visit to Kai Garden. Eaten with the duck, it provided an extra boost of crunch and crispiness. But we found that distracting and mostly left the biscuits alone. The usual sweet sauce that would go with the duck was more flavourful than the typical ones. The overall taste of the duck skin and condiments was above average.
We were asked for our choice of the second preparation i.e. what to do with the meat of the duck. We decided on them being fried with noodles, for which we were charged an extra $13.80. The bowl of noodles that was served was smaller than we had expected. What was more surprising was that it contained only small strips of duck. The taste of the noodles was good, but we were disappointed with the duck content in the noodles.
