Scoop Wholefoods Singapore and Eccellente by HAO Mart are two new stores that opened in Singapore this year. Scoop opened in the earlier part of the year and Eccellente in October 2019. Many retail stores open but offer the usual unexciting stuff. We were therefore happy to see these two new shops with fresh mechandise and retailing concepts.
Scoop Wholefoods Singapore
Zero waste. Plastic free shopping. Organic. Greta Thunberg will probably approve of the retail concept of Scoop Wholefoods from Australia. It was founded in 2013 with two missions – to improve people’s health and well-being and to safeguard the planet for future generations. It currently has six stores in Australia, one in Bristol UK and one in Tanglin Mall Singapore.
Apart from the wide range of natural and organic products, the most interesting feature of the Scoops Wholefoods store is their bulk retail concept – bring your own container and buy what you need. This cuts waste and does away with unnecessary packaging. The instructions on the weighing stations seem straight forward.
A wide range of products are available at Scoop Wholefoods Tanglin Mall, not just food. Household items like natural glass cleaner and mould control are dispensed by volume. Ditto for personal hygiene items like shampoo and moisturiser. The products are mainly sold by weight or volume. Customers who did not bring their own containers can buy empty ones.
Here is a quick look at the Scoops Wholefoods Singapore store and we highlight some interesting items.
Thinking of making tempura at home? There is tempura flour from Nagano Japan ($1.50 / 100g). Cempo Merah pink rice from Indonesia costs $1.25 / 100g (picture below).
The numerous types of flour available, including organic coconut flour from Sri Lanka ($1.25 / 100g) and purple sweet potato flour costs $2.50/100g (picture below).
For the spa at home, Dead Sea Salt from Israel is available ($2.75/100g) and organic matcha (green tea) body scrub ($3.30 / 100g) sounds luxurious. Various types of clay are also available (picture below).

Eccellente by HAO mart
Eccellente by HAO mart is a Gourmet Supermarket at Capitol Piazza. Having a supermarket in the basement is probably a welcome move for the residents upstairs in the Eden Residences Capitol, and The Capitol Kempinski Hotel Singapore.
HAO mart is a newish chain of convenience stores and supermarkets in Singapore. It appears from the website that they were established in 2016. The HAO Group now operates 46 outlets including Eccellente by HAO mart. For the most part, Eccellente is like a normal supermart. What makes it unique is the section selling Taiwanese products. It is described as a “Premium Showcase for Taiwan Quality Agricultural Produces”.
Here are some of the products from Taiwan that looked interesting to us. Various types of fish floss. These can take the place of the more common pork floss.
Many types of dried fruits, candy and nougat were available. The containers of egg rolls gave us the idea that Eccellente by HAO mart would be a good place to shop for Chinese New Year goodies. We can replace the usual CNY snacks with these Taiwan alternatives.
In addition to the various tidbits and snacks there were also sauces and other condiments from Taiwan. Apart from the Taiwanese products section, the rest of the Eccellente by HAO mart at Capitol Piazza was like regular supermarket with the typical fresh food items.
