Mr Bean started as a hawker stall selling soya milk and beancurd. The popular homegrown soya bean chain now has many outlets in Singapore and overseas. Over the years, it has introduced new flavours and added products such as soya ice cream, pancakes and puddings to its menu. Nevertheless, in the minds of many consumers, Mr Bean is perceived as good and reliable but somewhat unexciting. To up the cool quotient, Mr Bean has introduced a brand new dessert concept – 豆趣 Do Qoo (pronounced as Do-Cool). Do Qoo by Mr Bean offers refreshing jelly or soy pudding topped with colourful chewy abacus.
The first outlet of 豆趣 Do Qoo is in PLQ Mall. It shares the space with a regular Mr Bean outlet. Do Qoo dessert is made for on-the-go enjoyment but there are a few tables available in the compact but pleasantly decked out space.
Do Qoo desserts are essentially base layers of grass jelly, soy pudding or Osmanthus Aiyu Jelly with various toppings including its signature “Abacus”. A drizzle of soy cream adds the final touch.
The colourful abacus (shaped like the Hakka Yam Abacus Seeds – 客家算盘子 Suan Pan Zi) are available in three flavours – Taro, Yellow Sweet Potato and Purple Sweet Potato. They are slightly chewy, like Japanese mochi, and are not too sweet.
Do Qoo by Mr Bean offers standard dessert cups with witty names like Matcha Made in Heaven and Yours Taro-ly. You can also choose your own combination of base and toppings for a customised dessert cup.
We tried the Golden Beauty ($4.20) and Blue Mint Monday ($4.20). Both looked good and were enjoyable. There was a nice mix of textures and flavours. They were refreshing treats which satisfied our sweet tooth without making us feel stuffed.
The Golden Beauty is made of Do Qoo Abacus, osmanthus jelly and lychee pops on a base of grass jelly and soy pudding.
Blue Mint Monday consists of a base of osmanthus aiyu jelly and soy pudding, topped with Do Qoo Abacus, blue pea jelly and brown sugar hanten jelly.
The dessert cups of Do Qoo by Mr Bean are one of the affordable luxuries of life. They are an upgrade from the beancurd of Mr Bean and fit for Instragram. The colourful desserts look good and taste good. They allow us to be a little indulgent without feeling remorseful. Cool.
