Choupinette is a small French cafe along Bukit Timah Road, next to Coronation Plaza. It is not a new French cafe, in fact, it has probably been there for around 20 years. We dropped in for lunch on a weekday.
Choupinette Cafe and Bukit Timah Clinic are the two shops that bookend this short row of shophouses along Bukit Timah Road. In between are various other restauarants (such as KARA Cafe which we wrote about recently), food retail and other businesses. It is a nice set of retail shops. There are only a few (hard to get) parking lots in front of the shops. Weekdays are the best time as roadside parking lots are usually available at the nearby residential areas.
Cafe Interior
The Choupinette cafe interior looked roughly the same as what we remember it to be on our last visit about ten years ago. It is probably more spacious now with the COVID distancing rules. It used to be packed like a typical French cafe with small tables placed in close proximity. But the same casual, cozy cafe atmosphere is still there.
Choupinette Menu
Here are pictures of the main portions of the Choupinette menu. Brunch food like sandwiches and egg dishes take centre stage. In addition to the menu items, remember to ask about the daily specials. On the day of our visit it was duck confit and beef lasagna. We decided to have the weekly lunch set ($26 each).
Weekly Lunch Set
The Choupinette weekly lunch set covers a soup or salad, croque monsieur, eggs Benedict or daily special and coffee or tea. The cappucino was the first to arrive. It was very good.
The soup of the day was mushroom soup. We were both glad we chose this as our starter. The soup had a robust mushroom flavour and a pleasant viscosity.
For main course we landed on a croque monsieur and a duck confit. The croque monsieur is also on the regular menu ($19). The two large and thick slices of bread were nicely grilled. The blend of flavours of the ham and cheese was well-balanced. It was a good brunch dish which we think may be enough for the two of us. That would be the plan for a future visit so as to leave room for some of the cakes on display.
The duck confit was a more memorable dish. The duck was well prepared. Crisp and moist at the right places. The sauce and the mashed potato provided the ideal partner for the duck. If we are in search of a good value for money lunch place in Bukit Timah, this Choupinette set lunch will be high on our list. Service was friendly and prompt, consistent with the homely atmosphere of this restaurant.
